I am Oscar! I am a native Spanish speaker with an academic background in teaching. I originally was born in Lima-Perú where I started my teaching career. I taught for a decade in public schools in Perú. It was a great experience teaching teenagers in my original country. There, I also did extracurricular activities on weekends with my students.
When I moved to California, I began my ESL classes at community college where I started getting involved in teaching, so I was a Spanish tutor while I was taking classes in college. I provided one-on-one support to both beginner and advanced Spanish students in Spanish literature courses.
After I graduated from college and got my transferable classes, I was admitted to San José State University (SJSU) where I started my Master's degree in Spanish. I was selected to teach Spanish as a Teaching Assistant (TA), so I lectured Spanish for one year at SJSU for beginners. After I got my MA in Spanish, I started teaching Spanish at an elementary school for four years. It was a delightful experience to teach Spanish from kindergarten to eighth grade. At this school, I enjoyed teaching Spanish to kids by introducing and practicing through enriching cultural stories and songs. Children learned days of the week, numbers, colors, and basic vocabulary through songs and rhymes. Additionally, I prepared middle schoolers for World Language classes in high school, and I prepared them to successfully continue intermediate and advanced Spanish classes.
After this great experience teaching elementary school students, I began my classes to earn my credential in Spanish. As a part of the credential curricula, I taught students in two public high schools; however, my teaching practice gave me the opportunity to navigate and be equipped for teaching online due to the Covid pandemic. I was able to engage and interact with my students by leveraging many virtual tools.
I also taught Spanish in a community college, and It was a great experience to teach adults.
