Hi there! My name is Joy. I recently graduated from the University of Oxford, having studied English Language and Literature, and I love to teach just as much as I love to learn.

I have taught at several educational institutions, working with children from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade in common core, creative writing, art, and more. My favorite experience was teaching the Institute for Excellence in Writing curriculum to groups of students in grades 6-7, integrating technology, games, and peer learning into my lessons.

In addition to formal teaching positions, I tutor in my free time and provide application support to students. Another main teaching focus is delivering one-on-one SAT Preparation instruction. I enjoy the process of getting to know my students' strengths and weaknesses and creating individualized learning plans to help them achieve the highest score possible. As of now, I have over 5 years of teaching and tutoring experience in various institutional and cultural settings, with lots of positive feedback from supervisors, families, and most importantly students. My teaching experience, combined with my rigorous academic training at Oxford, makes me a tutor who has a thorough understanding both of how to teach and what to teach.

I follow the methods of differentiated instruction, which means that I am intentional in assessing the needs of each individual student and responding to those needs as necessary. I also believe in providing thorough, quantitative feedback to students to help them think critically about their own work without getting overly caught up in numbers or bogged down by mistakes. In essence, I see, respect, and value my students as individuals, and this approach allows me to build positive, safe relationships that encourage learning and confidence-building.

Best English tutor we have !

Joy is very patient and attentive with our son’s English learning. She explains pronunciation very clearly, especially the differences between sounds like “ai” and “ay.” She pays close attention to the details and makes sure kids really understands them. She is a wonderful teacher!
