Hi, I have a Master's degree in Spanish & Learning Styles, graduate level coursework in English and Phonetics, and a B.A. in Spanish. I just completed my BCLAD (language learning theories) certification from Stanford University. I do offer a free, one 15 min. lesson to see if my style is a good fit for you. After years of tutoring Spanish, French, and English, I'm happy to have 100% returning Spanish, French, Conversational English, Italian, and English writing students, as well as receive positive feedback from each student. In the accompanying picture, I am translating Spanish for President Clinton for the Red Cross; it was an honor to translate for him as I love languages and helping people, especially for the Red Cross Disaster Relief services.

I tutor Spanish, French, English, SAT English, SAT Writing, CBEST prep, writing strategies, as well as computer applications such as Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages (for Mac), various iPad apps, all in Spanish or English.

My style is RELAXED and very positive, as I teach a language it's even FUN whether it be a computer application or a language lesson, including writing. I think feeling comfortable is most important when trying to understand a new language. I also bring various techniques that include technology, short grammar videos, games, short culture videos, songs that the student likes, and texts from topics that the given student likes. I really customize each training session to get my student up to speed and able to understand the given concepts, no matter if it is English 1, 2, English 101, Spanish 1, Spanish 5, French 2 or Italian 1.

I lived in Spain in college and visited in high school. I've traveled to Mexico, Aruba, and El Caribe. I have been proud of my 100% retention of all students whom I have tutored because I am helpful, easy going, and effective. I customize each class to fit their individual needs, and I do not charge for prep time. Currently I teach tea

CBEST

CBEST

As a teacher, I had to pass the CBEST test to apply for and teach in California. My BA, MA, years of teaching experience, and taking the test myself have all helped me to become an effective CBEST coach and tutor.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 4th, 5th and 6th learners full time as a teacher for 2 years. In addition, at Fairmont schools, as the Instructional Technology Coordinator, I weekly modeled for teachers in their classroom technology-infused lessons for students in grades K-6 for eight fun years. Therefore, I learned and created exciting lessons (and taught) to each grade level and content area, including for grade 4 - a gold rush inspiration, scavenger hunt, and power point presentation for history classes, grade 5 - a Donner Party presentation and cooperative learning experience, grade 2 - an Abraham Lincoln short bio clip along with an Inspiration file, and short class play, grade 1 - plants lesson with photos, excel to chart growth and vocab on flashcards via Power Point. These are just a sample of what I have taught over the years to elementary children. Teachers come to me to infuse technology weekly, and in turn, I become a more effective elementary teacher who knows what grade level teaches what topic in each content area, and how to excite and motive the learner in each class via technology and various effective teaching strategies including cooperative learning, active learning, authentic/learning by doing and technology assisted learning.
English

English

I have tutored and taught English at the middle school, high school and college levels, in Boston, Newport Beach, San Jose, and Granada Spain. I studied Languages and linguistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I enjoy helping my students understand various types of text, including: novels, short stories, poetry, and even textbooks. I enjoy analyzing and explaining all grammar rules in clear, specific steps, even with pictures, timelines, whatever it may take for the learner to understand.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I went to graduate school in which I studied Foreign Language Learning (Pedagogy), also known as second language acquisition and Spanish. Our University had a unique program with Universidad de Granada Spain, so I have helped ESL students at both the college and high school levels in both the U.S. and in Spain when I lived there. After grad school, I taught ESL for two summers at Cushing Academy in Boston where they have over 40 levels of English as a second language. I then taught ESL English as a second language in Costa Mesa for two years. Afterwards, I took a position as a teacher trainer and high school. While at Fairmont Prep, I was asked sub often as an ESL instructor, and then later to lead a group of 24 ESL students throughout Prague, Vienna and Berlin and had a fabulous trip with all students. Before and after the trip, I coordinated parent meetings, the ESL culture assignments while traveling, last minute details, FAQ’s, and the trip blog. Currently, I teach high school Spanish in San Jose each day, and quite often teach ESL, as needed. My years of experience teaching ESL/ESOL, living in Spain, and leading a group of ESL learners abroad have helped me become a qualified ESL tutor.
General Computer

General Computer

I have been teaching adults software for more than 10 years. I currently teach teachers at a 1:1 laptop school so I have to be aware and able to answer any question on a number of different applications, websites, etc. I feel that my MA in Learning styles is crucial in my ability to teach sometimes the many steps in learning a new computer program or system. I have also trained telecommunications and financial software so I have real world experience. Back in 1999, when the state of Idaho required the passing grade of a general computer test on topics such as desktop publishing, databases, spreadsheets, the internet, Multimedia, Word, Outlook, etc. I passed with a very high score, and ended up training teachers for two years for a company called Futurekids, who offered professional development of computer skills to teachers, who needed to pass this test. For the last ten years, I have attended CUE, Computer Using Educators, who has an annual techie conference in which I am able to keep up to speed on the latest and greatest ways of technology integration. In the past several years, I have helped choose hardware and software for the "Classroom of the Future" that includes smart boards, remote clickers, document projectors, the mimio, to software such as inspiration, united streaming, google earth, etc. I was instrumental in testing with teachers and students the most effective ones, and getting them into the lab for them to use, inc. Qwizdom instant remotes. And I like introducing and teaching powerpoint, excel, access, from apple: imovie, comic life, keynote, numbers, pages; to google docs, google notebook, google research, to any computer program or skill that they need, inc. short cuts to the importance of backing up one's data and organizing files on an external drive, server, not just the memory sticks.
Macintosh

Macintosh

I currently work at a Macintosh 1:1 laptop school. I am in charge of teaching the teachers all the technology. We only have Macs on our campus, no PCs. Therefore, I have to know any and all questions about Macs, these can include the ilife suite, which includes iphoto, idvd, imovie, as well as other useful software like Numbers, Keynote, Pages, Garage Band, Podcast maker, etc. Teaching these topics for more than a few years have really helped me learn all I can about Macintosh computers. I also troubleshoot them for both teachers and students as needed, from spilling coke on them, to testing, batteries to hard drive crashes. I love being an active, happy mac user and now wont go back to PC.
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

I have taught Microsoft Outlook more than seven years to over 300 adult learners, from a school teacher, to a CEO of a company to a principal of very busy schools. I know how to communicate and teach any adult (or at any age since I have taught students in grades 2 up to high school and college) the best way to navigate throughout Outlook and use it in the most efficient ways possible for them. I've also read through over 16 manuals and have hand picked specific chapters for the exact learner and what they need, from calendar meeting requests, to calendar scheduling, to creating subfolders for their mass amounts of email to stay organized, yet not missing an important email to reply to. I also taught Outlook for 2 years for a software training company called Futurekids. Thus, I feel I have the background and knowledge to help anyone learn Outlook, regardless of the version that they are using.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have taught PowerPoint for over 10 years.
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

I have taught Microsoft Windows since 1999, so for more than eight years to over 340 adult earners, from a school teacher, to a CEO of a company to a principal of very busy schools. I know how to communicate and teach any adult (or at any age since I have taught students in grades 2 up to high school and college) the best way to navigate throughout Windows and use it in the most beneficial ways possible for them. I've also read through over ten manuals and have hand picked specific chapters for the exact learner and what they need, from exploring their machine, to file management, to managing downloads, the importance of an anti virus software, managing their applications, etc. I also taught Windows for 2 years for a software training company called Futurekids. Thus, I feel I have the background and knowledge to help anyone learn Windows, regardless of the version or year that they are using.
Praxis

Praxis

I have a MA in Spanish and had to pass the Praxis CSET test a few years ago. I also have a BA in Spanish, and I lived and studied in Spain for a year in college, so I feel quite confident in my Spanish abilities. I also translate for the Red Cross and have been deployed nationally to translate English to Spanish for Disaster Relief Services.
Spanish

Spanish

I have a Master's degree in Spanish and Learning Styles, and I have a B.A. in Spanish, so I just love teaching Spanish. I have lived in Spain various times, including college. My second masters is in Learning a second language, so I truly understand how the brain works while acquiring a new language. I have visited and lived in various spanish speaking nations inc. Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Last year, I completed my BCLAD (language learning theories) certification from Stanford. I have translated for President Clinton for the Red Cross Disaster Services. I have taught Spanish at the middle school, high school (Spanish I, II, III, IV, V, and AP), and college levels (Spanish 105 and 106). I have created an online iTunes U course and website for both Spanish 1 and 2 for the high school level that have helped many students that I teach. I lived in Spain in college and visited in high school. Thus, I am totally fluent in the Spanish language and enjoy teaching others how to learn and master the Spanish language.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have taught various grade levels for many years. I have taught high school full time for 3 years, college for 2 years, 4th, 5th and 6th learners full time as a teacher for 3 years. Currently, I teach teachers and students at a 1:1 device district and love what I do. I have a Masters Degree in Spanish and Learning Styles, which is how people learn. I have taken courses in grad and undergrad school that explained the different types of study skills for various types of learners. How people learn fascinates me, so that is why I am an effective study skills tutor as I can and know how to tailor a lesson to meet the various needs of each learner, including visual, audio, hands on, cooperative, etc and how to apply to it various lessons. I also taught students and teachers for eight years as an Instructional Technology Coordinator to enhance learning and studying skills using technology as a tool. I have attended many conferences about effective learning strategies and enjoy helping students improve their overall study skills, including a 20 hour workshop on study skills this past August.

Knowledgeable & creative!

First of all, I enjoyed every single lesson I had with Teresa. She has a great sense of humor and a lot positive energy. She is not only experienced, and knowledgeable about languages, but you can also tell that she simply loves to teach. She created a curriculum that was tailored to me which shows great adaptability and creativity. She also had a lot fun ideas on how to introduce me to the world of the English language. It's a pity that I was only in the US for a limited time, otherwise I would have definitely continued to take lessons from her.

Energetic tutor

This is the first session my daughter had with Teresa. Teresa clarifies the Spanish verb tenses. Aside from her positive energy, she came up with easier ways to memorize and understand. We will definitely have her back

Tutor responded:

Thank you Doug for your awesome feedback. Each tutoring session I try different approaches and methods from a story, a song, or drawing a picture to help understand whatever the concept may be. And when teaching a foreign language I often ask if my pace of the session is too fast, or too slow, to get it just right for them. I sure enjoy teaching your daughter Spanish 7/8 and seeing her overall fluency improve each session.

Great Spanish Teacher

Teresa is a very good Spanish Teacher who will help anyone to learn the language. She is well educated in the Spanish language. She is also very patient and is able to quickly ascertain student's problems. She also adapts to the learning style of the student and will help them through their problem with great ease. Because of her ability to fit any learning style, my son's knowledge of Spanish has vastly improved. Thank you Teresa for the great job you have done!

Excellent tutor with great teaching techniques

Teresa is a great teacher and has helped me prepare for Spanish 2. She was good at finding my weaknesses and helped me improve. She made learning fun and found interesting and exciting ways of teaching Spanish. I never felt like it was work. Before working with Teresa I did not have confidence in my Spanish but now after working with her I feel much more confident. Teresa has done an incredible job helping improve my son's Spanish 2 grade. She has taught him special ways to remember correct verbs tense and vocabulary spelling. She has made a very difficult subject for him fun and has changed his attitude towards the Spanish. He is now much more confident in class. Her flexible schedule has taken the stress out figuring out times around his busy wrestling schedule.

Really Comes Through

Teresa has really come through for my son. We asked her to do intensive work with our son (multiple weekly sessions) in order to help him make up work he needs in order to graduate. She has helped him chew through an astounding number of assignments while coordinating with his school to ensure that she knows all the assignments needed. I did not think my son could get as far as he did as fast as he did. She also exhibited patience with the inevitable scheduling issues that crop up when you try to get in 6-8 hours of tutoring a week. I am very very pleased with Teresa and highly recommend her.
