Hi there! My name is Jean. I've taught Kindergarten and First Grade for a combined total of 12 years. I also worked as a Reading Intervention teacher in Torrance Unified School District. I am trained in various different reading and phonics programs and excel at teaching reading, writing and math skills. I tutored pods of kids and individual students during the Covid lockdown time. I've worked with students in all socioeconomic areas and English Learners as well. I have a California Teaching Credential and a Masters Degree in curriculum and instruction. I know the state standards in all academic subjects and my goal is to help your child reach their full potential.
I have been trained in the Guided Reading Program which helps teach students to read at their instructional level. That is the level at which a child can read that is between a hard level and their independent reading level. I work on fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. I am able to assess your child to know where they are starting and where they need to be. Additionally, I can work with children who are above grade level and need to be challenged, as well as students who are struggling. Some students just need extra practice with basic skills such as learning sight words, practicing addition/subtraction facts, and learning new vocabulary words. Students often struggle working with mom and dad as opposed to working with someone different.
I have worked with pods of students primarily during the Covid struggles. As homeschool children often work together, I'm a great person to help review and provide extra practice to the academic concepts being taught at home.
I am trained in many phonics and reading programs that are used in classrooms today included Guided Reading, Zoo Phonics, and Project Read. I use various strategies to teach children their letters and sounds, and putting those together to make words.
