I am a senior currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at UC Riverside. I have 5 years of working tutor experience at the high school level while employed at the Redlands Unified School District, as well as many years doing private tutoring. I have 5 years of working tutor experience at the high school level while employed at the Redlands Unified School District, as well as many years doing private tutoring. I have 10+ years of experience in mathematics having taken four years of math classes in high school and accelerated classes such as Geometry, Algebra II, Accelerated Precalculus, and AP Calculus BC. I passed the AP Calculus exam and went on to take higher level math classes in college ranging from Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Statistics. The students that I have worked with have seen real results in their grades and test results, some even improving their grades as much as from Cs to As.
The beginning of my employed tutoring experience started in 2012 where I was a tutor for the AVID program working for the Redlands Unified School District. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a program that is provided at many junior high and high schools across the country. The program is meant to give students rigorous instruction in academic survival skills in order to be college ready by the time of graduation. One of my responsibilities as a tutor working in this program was facilitating tutorials which are group based student-led study sessions. They would consist of groups of about 5-7 students based on the academic subject that they needed help in. My job would be to assist students with their questions only after they were unable to solve it as a group. I would primarily help students who needed help in math related subjects. This ranged from subjects like Algebra I, Algebra II, Common Core, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, and SAT math. There would also be an annual event known as the Study-a-thon which is a study session that spans a weekend in order to prep students for their 1st semester final exams. I would be a part of this every year and I would tutor groups of up to 15 students in various different math subjects for hours at a time. When I get involved with these group tutoring sessions I try to create an engaging environment that involves a lot of feedback from the student. My teaching style involves visual explanation of the material that I am teaching as well as providing context as to how this information can be useful and applied. My goal is to explain topics as simply and as thoroughly as possible. This combination of giving a simple breakdown of the information as well as context to its application and what it means has been incredibly successful in students understanding and remembering it. It is important to me that a student can understand the overall concept of a topic rather than memorizing a sequence of steps as this helps to better retain lessons in math in the future. I have taken some of the ideas that I have learned from high school tutoring and try to incorporate it into private tutoring as well. I worked here for 5 years and left 2017 in order to focus on finishing my Mechanical Engineering degree at UC Riverside.
I also have many years of experience in private tutoring as well. I began doing private tutoring around the same time I was tutoring under the AVID program. I have assisted students ranging from middle school to college level. My earliest private tutoring student was a college student who was taking college algebra. I was tutoring her for about a year and I helped her in College Algebra. We went over topics like quadratic equations, linear equations, exponential functions and logarithms. This student did exceptional in her class and graduated from her junior college going on to attend CSU San Bernardino. The next student I tutored was a high school student who wanted help in her Precalculus class. I tutored her for a few months and covered sinusoidal functions, equations of circles, hyperbolas, ellipses, and the unit circle. She has since graduated and has gone on to attend CSU San Marcos. Following this student I tutored a middle school student for about half a year in Prealgebra mathematics. I helped him with his square roots, inequalities, and proportions. In the time that I tutored him his grade in math improved from a C to an A and he has not been in need of math tutoring since. My last student that I tutored was a high school student who I tutored in calculus. I assisted him with different techniques for taking derivatives and integrals such as the product rule, chain rule, and integration by parts, and volumes of revolved solids. This student passed his AP Calculus exam and is now attending UC Irvine. This is the extent of my private tutoring experience. When I have private tutoring sessions I try to implement the same style as in tutorials and create an interactive engaging experience that involves regular feedback from the student. I find that this tends to have better results of students retaining the information rather than a lecture or simply solving endless examples.
I have years of experience tutoring in both a school setting as well as private tutoring. I have been successful in assisting students ranging from middle school to college level and I have worked in large groups as well as 1-on-1 tutoring. There is something extremely rewarding about aiding students who are in need of help. I enjoy seeing the joy when a student can finally grasp a difficult concept for the first time and everything starts make sense. Through my experience being a high school tutor as well as an undergrad myself, I have developed a sense of how to explain topics in these subjects with clarity and simplicity. Basically, I remember what it was like to learn this stuff for the first time and understand the frustrations it sometimes causes.
