I hold a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Grove City College, which grounds my ability to tutor chemistry and biology at both the high school and introductory college level. Before entering the classroom, I worked as a Laboratory Specialist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where I carried out research-grade chemical and biological procedures daily. That experience lets me connect textbook concepts to the way science is actually practiced, which helps students understand why a principle matters rather than memorizing it in isolation.

For seven years I have taught secondary science full-time, most recently as an AP Bilogy, Chemistry and AP Environmental Science teacher and previously as Science Department Chair. I have also taught Biology, Honors Chemistry, and an Honors Environmental Seminar to students roughly ages 14 through 18 in a classroom setting, designing each course from the ground up. My approach moves students from direct observation of a phenomenon, to the technical reasoning that explains it, and finally to the larger questions it raises. I emphasize careful attention, honest lab work, and clear scientific writing, and I adapt pacing to the individual in front of me.

Alongside classroom instruction, I have worked one-on-one with students for years through tutoring, office hours, and lab supervision, which has taught me to find exactly where a student's understanding breaks down and rebuild it from there. I am currently completing a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in science. Whether the goal is passing a chemistry exam, working through a biology unit, or thinking clearly about environmental questions, I can meet a student at their level and move them forward with patience and precision.

Approved Subjects

Botany

Botany

For the past four years, I have designed and taught a dedicated botany unit within my high school environmental science course, leading students through plant anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, and field identification as an integrated sequence. The unit transitions from the structure of plant tissues and organs into the physiological processes that animate them, including photosynthesis and primary production, before developing the classification skills students need to identify and name what they observe. I emphasize the direct observation of living specimens over formal theory, so that taxonomic categories and identification keys become tools for seeing more precisely, rather than terms to memorize.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I teach Chemistry and Environmental Science at the high school and honors level, including a college-preparatory Environmental Science course. My background in biochemistry, with a BS from Grove City College and prior work as a laboratory specialist at UVa Medical School, lets me connect environmental concepts to the underlying chemistry and biology that drive them. I have served as a Science Department Chair and bring more than six years of classroom experience, helping students move from careful observation of real phenomena to rigorous analysis and clear scientific writing. My approach emphasizes precision, evidence, and the habits of mind that turn a curious student into a confident, capable scientist.

Excellent, Patient, and Thorough AP Biology Tutor

I had an excellent experience with Andrew as my AP Biology tutor. From the very beginning, it was clear that he genuinely cared about making sure I understood the material, rather than simply getting through the lesson. He was incredibly patient, thorough, and attentive to detail. He never rushed through a topic or overlooked the smaller details that are so important in AP Biology. Andrew has a great way of breaking down difficult concepts and explaining them clearly and patiently. Whenever I had a question or was unsure about something, he took the time to explain it from different angles until I truly understood it. He also made sure there were no gaps in my understanding before moving on to the next topic. What impressed me most was how much Andrew genuinely cared about my learning and success. He was knowledgeable, encouraging, and fully engaged throughout the entire lesson. I felt very comfortable asking questions, and I came away from the session feeling much more confident in the material. I am very grateful I found Andrew and would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated AP Biology tutor.
