I worked with international deaf students at Gallaudet University, and to deaf students in Rochester Institute of Technology in mastering both languages.

I am friendly, and patient. I love meeting new people with a passion to learn a new language and to get better at a subject that appropriately challenges them.

I have gone to Gallaudet University which is a large deaf university with an even larger deaf community that primary uses American Sign Language. I've grown up using sign language in k-12 school, colleges and consider myself to be hard of hearing. I've also spent several years in a different deaf communities in different states such as New York, Massachusetts, Washington D.C., and California. Each regions has their own accent or traits in sign language, just like spoken English, and this experience has given me unique perspective as an ASL tutor being well versed in multiple accents/traits.

I am hard of hearing myself, and uses many skills such as lip reading, speaking, sign language, and written communications. The platform for tutoring will have video chat, whiteboard, and text chat to communicate during the lessons.

I love to tutor, and am willing to adjust to different levels of learning preferences. I can make it fun, or structured. I am very flexible in how the peer may want to learn the materials, and very open to feedback to restructure our lessons together.

Hard of Hearing

I am hard of hearing. I have an hearing aid (high powered) in my left ear, and am completely deaf in my right ear. I rely on close captioning on T.V. and use interpreters in classrooms and meetings when there are too many lips to follow. I've grown up in speech therapy as well as using sign language as my form of communications and skills developments. I've grown up using Sign language because I am hard of hearing. I've been involved in the deaf community since I was a baby, and primary language was signing. I went to a deaf school in Wisconsin in my junior and senior years in high school. I've also attended two years at Gallaudet University in D.C. (Deaf university, primary sign language campus).

Growing as a student.

I feel I have shown growth with my tutor, she planned out a great lesson the second time, pretty challenging but a very good explanation and demonstration was presented. Can’t wait for next time!

Unbelievable!

We got into a rhythm so fast it became incredibly fun, so sad the lesson was over. It went by so fast I couldn’t believe it. I’m for sure gonna have to start getting into a rhythm of having lessons with Bethany, she’s an great teacher.

super sweet!

Bethany was super sweet with my daughter. My daughter really wants to learn ASL, but she's shy and won't speak up about exactly what words she is interested in learning. For our first lesson Bethany prepared ahead just in case and even found out about my daughter's interests to make sure to include words that have to do with her hobbies and interests. I'm very pleased!
