I like to say that I don't teach math. I teach students. I have earned a bachelor's degree, two master's degrees, and a PhD in mathematics, with a research focus in abstract algebra. For the past ten years I have taught at the University of Nebraska, CSU San Bernardino, CSU Channel Islands, and Harvey Mudd College, working with college aged learners. I also have done work with National Math Camps, teaching summer topics courses for middle school students. My courses have spanned the math curriculum, though I have taught algebra, calculus, and linear algebra most often. I have also worked with students one-on-one in tutoring sessions, office hours, and the classroom, so I am comfortable explaining a topic from the very beginning or zeroing in on the one step that keeps tripping someone up.
I believe knowledge is constructed through doing and reflecting, not absorbed by watching someone else solve problems. So in our sessions, you do the math: you try ideas, test them, and explain your reasoning. Then we look back at what worked, what didn't, and why, because that reflection is what turns a solved problem into lasting understanding. New ideas stick best when they connect to what you already know, so I start by finding out where you are and build from there. My role is to give enough support to take the next step yourself, then step back as your confidence grows. Mistakes are welcome, because working through them is often where the real learning happens. My goal is for you to leave every session able to reason your way to answers on your own.
I can help with any math course, whether you are catching up, preparing for an exam, or getting ahead. I enjoy working with students in all math courses. The thing I enjoy most is sharing in that moment of learning when the metaphorical light bulb turns on and everything clicks into place. Wherever you are starting from, I would be glad to help you reach your goals in math. Send me a message and let's get started!
