Greetings!
My name is John S. and I have always enjoyed tutoring students! I have a background in academic tutoring, statistics in pharmaceutical and academic research settings, and career experience working with people of all ages. I earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of California, Riverside and a Master of Science in biostatistics from the University of Florida.
The approximately 5 years worth of experience I've accrued is largely comprised of tutoring students in the 13-18 age range in all the subjects tested on the SAT and ACT in addition to the test-taking strategies for those tests. I have tutored and/or taught dozens students either in a volunteer or a paid capacity, with the latter occurring as an independent contractor or teaching/TA employee. I currently tutor a high school sophomore in preparation for the digital SAT separately from Wyzant. My digital SAT score is 1560 (780 Reading & Writing, 780 Mathematics)
My usual approach with students is to gauge each one's aptitude, academic background, and personality, remaining keen on the fact that each student has unique combination of gifts, desires, and experiences. I am also an ardent believer in practice questions/tests: practice makes perfect! Integrating these qualities into my overall tutoring approach has helped me tailor my instruction more effectively and build a better, lasting rapport with my students. As we know, students who feel better about their tutors are more receptive to learning from them and thus have potential for greater progress under their direction. I sometimes stray from a serious countenance, even though I always take tutoring seriously; I always seize opportunities to make sessions more fun and engaging, especially when the students would otherwise be bored. I highly emphasize positive self-talk during the sessions, encouraging my students to be optimistic about their goals and current situation to the extent possible.
