Hi! My name is Joshua S. and I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with an M.S. in Mathematics. I am passionate about math at all levels, from basic algebra to upper-division courses in pure math. My goal is to communicate the essential ideas and concepts in math, to lay them bare and to make clear the intuition behind them. I firmly believe that all students are capable of attaining success in their goals in mathematics, and I am eager to assist them in their journey.

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Cal Poly Pomona, I taught remedial math classes in Basic and Intermediate Algebra to incoming freshmen who had struggled in math and needed additional assistance and support to attain the skill and proficiency needed to excel in their studies. In this manner I saw firsthand the many difficulties they faced and the specific mental roadblocks that stumbled them and hampered their mathematical progress, which allowed me to better understand how to give them the support and guidance they needed to excel in their mathematical journey.

During my education at Cal Poly I also had the opportunity to serve as a TA in an upper-division abstract algebra course. This experience demonstrated to me further the importance of good pedagogy in all levels of mathematics, whether basic or advanced. The students were all highly motivated and diligent, but often they still struggled as they worked to expand their mathematical reasoning abilities and to adjust to a heightened level of mathematical abstraction. It was imperative to keep the focus on intuition and understanding, and not to set unreasonable expectations simply because of the advanced nature of the course. Thus I gained valuable training in teaching advanced mathematical concepts in a clear, accessible and intuitive manner.

I am knowledgeable in the following subjects: Algebra I & II, Geometry/Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus I, II and III, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Topology, Differential Geometry, Complex Analysis

Computer Programming

Computer Programming

During my education I took several programming courses for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Mathematics. In addition, I have utilized several programming languages for the purpose of doing computational investigations related to my mathematical coursework.
Logic

Logic

Throughout my mathematical education, I have continually made use of mathematical logic for the sake of developing rigorous proofs of mathematical theorems and doing precise, technical mathematical argumentation. In addition, I have cultivated a personal interest in formal logic and set theory for its own sake, as an independent branch of inquiry and as a vehicle for gaining deep insight into mathematics proper. I thus have a deep and profound understanding of mathematical logic and reasoning. I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with an M.S. in Mathematics.
Mathematica

Mathematica

I have an M.S. in Mathematics from Cal Poly Pomona and have utilized Mathematica throughout my education for the purpose of mathematical investigation and research. In particular I developed a tool in Mathematica for visualizing bivector fields for the purpose of my research in Poisson geometry. I have found Mathematica to be a powerful language and framework for symbolic manipulation and formal reasoning and have delved deeply into its advanced features for this purpose.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have a Master's degree in mathematics at Cal Poly Pomona and made use of MATLAB throughout my studies in fields such as numerical linear algebra and mathematical modelling. In all these cases I used MATLAB to obtain numerical answers to my questions and gain computational insight into the problem at hand.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

As part of both my undergraduate and graduate education in mathematics, I took many abstract proof-based analysis courses, covering real analysis, complex analysis, differential geometry, topology and other subjects. I have extensive experience tutoring these subjects to both undergraduate and graduate students in all variety of STEM disciplines.

The best college math tutor I've ever met. Extremely Professional, Knowledgeable, and Friendly.

I was first very skeptical about using Wyzant service to find help for my college Abstract Algebra and Applications with a Linear Algebra course. As you can see in Joshua's profile, he is one of the most highly skilled math tutors I have ever met. To tell anyone who is having doubts, trust me, Joshua can explain and go over difficult concepts/ problems way better than my professors can. There are not many tutors on Wyzant who is an absolute professional at math and fun to work with at the same time, but Joshua is one of them. His explanations are clear and easy to understand. If you still don't get it, Joshua will slowly go over concepts with you until you clearly understand it. Unlike other tutors, Joshua makes sure that each tutoring session goes as smoothly and efficiently as possible with his personal tablet and pen. 400% I would recommend him to anyone who is looking to get a math tutor on Wyzant. Ps. He's got a sick mustache

Abstract Algebra + linear algebra

Working with Joshua was really helpful for challenging problems and the intuition behind them, walking through key properties and rather than giving away the answer, asked guiding questions that led me to the right insights myself and double checked I understood the solutions. Joshua is knowledgeable, patient,  and supportive, and helped a lot for my understanding of abstract algebra & linear algebra, highly recommend.

Very knowledgeable and patient!

I reached out to Joshua very last minute for help with a Calculus project involving MATLAB and he was able to accommodate my busy schedule very well. Not only did he assist me in working through my project, but he was also able to explain the concepts very thoroughly and was very patient. I would definitely recommend him!

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Joshua is wonderful, extremely knowledgeable and very patient. My daughter really enjoyed working with him. He was such a huge help to her! His lesson consisted of Solving trigonometric equations and reasoning with the unit circle. Using substitution to concentrate on the algebraic aspects of the problem and then apply the unit circle once the value of the trigonometric term has been solved for. Solving both linear and quadratic trigonometic equations. I highly recommend him!

Super knowledgeable patient mathematics fanatic

Joshua is a very knowledgeable man that knows the motivation and formal construction for the concepts in mathematics and can explain these in very easy to understand terms. He can also adapt his teaching style according to the student's needs. Overall excellent professor both for diehard mathematics purists and more casual applied mathematics people
