Hi! My name is Mijin. I graduated from Oberlin College in 2000 with a BA in Creative Writing and Visual Arts. I received my MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a Certificate in the Teaching of Post-Secondary Reading from San Francisco State University in 2005.
I began my career in 1999 when I taught high school students, preparing them for the SAT and TOEFL. Before that, I tutored young children in English when my family moved from California to South Korea. Since then, I've taught in a variety of settings. I've been teaching ESL at Contra Costa College since 2019, where I've instructed adults in classes of 10-35, both online and in-person, at all skills and levels (Grammar 1-4, Listening/Speaking 1-3, Academic Reading 1-4, and Academic Writing 1-2). I recently taught at a language school, working online with highly advanced level students- specifically international scientists and software engineers, teaching Accent Enhancement, Academic Writing, and English Fluency for two years. Prior to this, I provided 1:1 lessons for an online academic program for gifted and talented children for three years and prior to that, taught ESL Grammar, Creative Writing, and Microcomputer Applications to immigrant adults and refugees in small class settings, at a private language institute in San Francisco for six years.
When I graduated from SFSU, I taught at Skyline College where I instructed adults in Academic Reading Strategies (Composition 101) and ESL Grammar in classroom settings of 35 students. I also piloted a college English Composition course at a local high school in Daly City. Before graduate school, I taught English Conversation at the Ajou University Language Institute for two years, instructing Korean university students and working adults in classes of about 20.
Students have often told me they appreciate my ability to explain concepts clearly, my approachability, and patience. Please contact me if you're interested in working with me!
