Hello, I'm Laura. I graduated cum laude with my Bachelor's Degree in Diversified Education and a Minor in Psychology (with Honors) from the University of La Verne. I also hold a Master's of Education from the University of La Verne. I have my Clear Teaching Credential with a Supplemental English Credential. I begin my lessons by helping my students to memorize and perform a poem to encourage confidence in public/classroom speaking. In addition, I will ask them age appropriate interview questions to help them prepare for classroom participation and school leadership roles. Next, I have them read aloud from an age appropriate high quality book. When they have finished the book (hopefully by reading at home), I engage them in higher level thinking questions (including themes, symbolism, etc). Finally, we work on various forms of writing. My students learn how to become very comfortable with top level paragraph and essay writing, as well as poems, letters, resumes, etc.
I have been teaching and tutoring for over 20 years. I taught 4th and 5th grades in the Walnut Valley Unified School District for over 10 years. After having my own children, I substituted in the Placentia/Yorba Linda Unified School District as well as starting a tutoring business. I have seen a lot of success with my students who really needed some extra help, as well as with my very advanced students to further their learning skills. My students often keep me for years, as their parents notice their big strides and confidence in the language arts area. Many of my shyer students become school leaders.
I absolutely love all of my students, and take a vested interest in helping to expand their learning and confidence in reading, speaking and writing. I tutor online as well as in my house. I am very flexible about rescheduling due to a student's sickness or busy schedule. I know what it feels like to be a very busy parent!
