I graduated with honors from UCLA's competitive Teacher Education Program, and have since moved to the Bay Area to pursue a career in education. I am credentialed in both Mathematics and English Language Arts. I specialize in teaching Foundational Mathematics, and have a great deal of experience with college-bound students as well as students with special learning needs.

When working with students, I help them identify their learning style and strengths and teach students to use them to their advantage. I emphasize strong conceptual understandings (why things work) as well as procedural fluency (accurately solving problems). If your student needs assistance in multiple subject areas, I am more than willing to provide tutoring in the following areas:

- Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II

- Writing, Reading Comprehension

- SAT tutoring, writing of college admission essays

I look forward to meeting you and your child.

Best wishes,

Harmony S.

ADHD

ADHD

UCLA's Masters Program taught us how to accommodate students with ADHD. Generally, students with ADHD are mainstreamed with the general population of students unless they have additional learning disabilities. Strategies that support ADHD students include faster delivery of content, repetition of content and directions, providing them with videos with closed captioning and variable speed, and access to copies of notes. Learning strategies that are beneficial for most learners such as color coding, visual demonstrations, and pictures support students with ADHD as well.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am credentialed in Foundational Mathematics, which authorizes me to teach 6th grade math through Geometry. I have 6 years of experience teaching Algebra I and have taught it at both the middle school level and high school level.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have 6 years of teaching experience in the field of mathematics. I have taught Algebra II to high school students, and use Common Core methods including multiple representations, and problem-based instruction.
CBEST

CBEST

I am credentialed in both English Language Arts and Foundational Mathematics, and am strong in both content areas. The CBEST tests you in English and Mathematics only. I've been tutoring for the CBEST for 2 years.
Common Core

Common Core

Common Core was implemented in 2010, and I began teaching in 2012. Due to my training in UCLA's credentialing and Masters programs, I had a solid understanding of the standards and how to teach them. These days, I am an expert at how to help students quickly and easily acquire the skills they need to be successful in school.
Drawing

Drawing

I have an associates degree in Fine Arts. I attended UCLA prestigious art school, and originally was an Art Major, although I later switched to a different major. When tutoring students in drawing, I take students through a variety of exercises, depending on their needs. For a student who struggles with proportions, I teach them to develop and use grids and use a pencil as a measuring tool to develop proportional objects in your drawing. When a student needs to develop their "eye" to draw objects as the eye sees them (rather than how we know them to be), I have students do "contour" drawings where they refrain from looking down and draw an object such as a crumpled up piece of newspaper. This helps them to learn to distinguish between what they see and what they know to be there.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

UCLA's Masters Program taught us how to accommodate students with Dyslexia. Generally, students with Dyslexia are mainstreamed with the general population of students unless they have additional learning disabilities. Strategies that support students with dyslexia include using particular fonts, verbal checks for understanding, and providing them with computers and software that will read text aloud when fonts are not available. During testing, it's essential the student has text they can read or has the content read to them in a private setting. Learning strategies that are beneficial for most learners such as color coding, visual demonstrations, and pictures support students with dyslexia as well. Teachers need to be mindful when using handwriting to use unique versions of letters. Students should be given access to copies of notes ahead of time when possible, and utilize paraprofessionals. In terms of tutoring, Arial or Comic Sans and size 12-18 font should be used, and handwriting things should be avoided to support unique lettering. Notes will be saved in appropriate formats. I am willing to accommodate additional disabilities as well. Students success is my priority!
English

English

I received a Masters in Education from UCLA and am credentialed in English Language Arts. I have extensive writing and editing experience through having attended UCLA and tutoring others.
GED

GED

Last year I taught a California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) intervention course, to help students who were struggling to pass the math portion of the CAHSEE. I taught my students test taking strategies and reasoning/critical thinking strategies to help them approach problems. The vast majority of my students (who had failed the test at least 1 time previously) passed. The CAHSEE is similar to the GED in the problem types that are asked and level of mathematical understanding required to pass it.
Geometry

Geometry

I am am credentialed in Foundational Math, which allows me to teach Geometry. I have taught Geometry at both the high school and middle school level.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I am credentialed in California for Foundational Mathematics, which allows me to teach 6th grade math through Geometry.
SAT Math

SAT Math

10 years of experience tutoring high school students for the SAT, including SAT prep courses.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have a credential in English Language Arts and Foundational Mathematics. As part of my Masters in Education coursework we learned about how to teach in a way so that students remember content. I teach my students on an on-going basis how to study. For example I teach them how to make flash cards that work, to make "songs" and "stories" with alliteration to help them memorize information, and quiz themselves by redoing problems that have been given to them on the homework or in class.
Writing

Writing

I received both my bachelors and masters from UCLA, and naturally, I was required to do a great deal of writing. When I teach students to write, I help them see the "patterns" one finds in an essay. Similar to a fractal, each paragraph of the essay is like a small version of the larger essay in that it has an introduction, discusses ideas, and has a concluding sentence. I teach students to write outlines using a series of graphic organizers. It helps them organize their thinking and develop an understanding of the "formula" for academic essay. I also teach students to differentiate between trustworthy and untrustworthy sources, and show them how to cite the ones they have chosen. My philosophy is that there are no such things as good writers, only good editors. I teach students to develop a draft and hone it until it gleams.

Great Tutor

My daughter was not doing well with her 1st college English class. Harmony did a great job helping her. My daughter’s writing skills have improved and so did her grades.

Amazing teacher!

Harmony her been helping my daughter re-learn math. Because of Common Core, there were large gaps in her learning the basics. So now as a teen, she's had a harder time understanding how to solve more complicated math. She's very funny and makes math fun for my daughter - which I never thought I'd hear her say! She also does a great job of using the online tools thru Zoom to conduct the sessions. If you're worried about doing online math tutoring like my daughter was, don't, because Harmony makes it easy for you! She's also affordable so my daughter can take 2 lessons a week. Highly recommend! I'd give her 10 stars if I could!
