Hello! My name is Tristan, an academic support tutor who specializes in writing and neurodiverse support for college students of all backgrounds. I am so excited to support my community beyond my work as a tutor and peer mentor at Mount San Antonio College, where I support students with a wide range of educational needs, including neurodiverse learners, veterans, and individuals with acquired brain injuries.

My approach is simple: I tutor students first and subjects second. This means that beyond completing assignments, I help students develop the skills and confidence necessary to become strong and independent learners. In our sessions, we might focus on any of the following skills depending on your goals: analyzing literature, organizing essays, forming clear ideas and arguments, strengthening writing and communication, developing strong research and critical thinking, utilizing college resources. In accordance with my personal pedagogy, I believe in a growth mindset and aim to create a space where students feel supported, not judged, and ready to face the challenges of college life with clarity and control.

As for my qualifications, I earned an Associate of Arts in Psychology, with Honors, at Mt. SAC, where I also completed a professional development training program for tutors centered on specialized support. Furthermore, I earned a Certificate of Behavioral Health at the University of the People, where I established a strong understanding of mental health studies. Lastly, I am currently working toward a career in academic counseling at California State University Northridge.

I look forward to helping you succeed!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As a peer mentor in the Nuerodiverse Unique Autistic Students in College Education (NUANCE) program at Mt. San Antonio College, I worked closely alongside a team of education professionals to help students with Autism Spectrum Disorder work toward their academic and social goals. I learned and utilized strategies from four key fields: Academic Counseling, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology, and Clinical Psychology. Over the course of four semesters, I had mentored a total of four students, meeting with them twice a week to not only tackle their academic goals, but to dive deeply into their personal challenges and aspirations alike—my background in behavioral health studies proved effective in building rapport and establishing clear boundaries. Although I no longer work as a peer mentor for NUANCE, I still provide them my expertise and support during educational workshops and in shadowing new mentors.

As a Dedicated Writing Specialist for the Writing Center at Mt. SAC, I worked closely with students attending the Critical Thinking and Writing course. From research to brainstorming, organization, revision, and beyond, I helped students across all stages of the writing process, ensuring each individual felt empowered in sharing their voice. In my current position as a Tutor Expert at Mt. SAC’s Accessible Technology Center, I frequently tutor students from diverse backgrounds, across a variety of subjects. Writing, editing, and critical thinking skills are paramount for both STEM and the humanities, which is why I pride myself on my ability to meet students where they are, no matter the subject.
