About Gordon

Bio

I'm Gordon. I grew up in the U.K. where I attended the University of Edinburgh and London University before coming to the U.S. to attend Caltech for my Ph.D. I've studied and utilized math, science and computing for most of my career. I'm an experienced educator, having taught and tutored students over a 10+ year period. This has included working with middle, high school and college students, as well as adults. I have taught almost all math topics relevant to high school and computer classes...

I'm Gordon. I grew up in the U.K. where I attended the University of Edinburgh and London University before coming to the U.S. to attend Caltech for my Ph.D. I've studied and utilized math, science and computing for most of my career. I'm an experienced educator, having taught and tutored students over a 10+ year period. This has included working with middle, high school and college students, as well as adults. I have taught almost all math topics relevant to high school and computer classes at the college level. Some students I tutored all the way from middle school to college. Some even changed their major and ended up in well-paying careers in data science and computing. I love having had the privilege of assisting them on part of their educational journey.

The learning experience should be fun, and along with tutoring the subject matter I try to develop motivation, passion, good study habits and goal setting as important side benefits to the experience. Outside tutoring, in my career as a consultant, I have used math and computing extensively, so I am able to convey to the student the exciting real-world applications of the subject.

Chemistry was one of my favorite subjects throughout high school and college. It is a fundamental science topic that any citizen in today's world needs to understand, since it impacts society and our lives in so many ways, including understanding food additives, pollution, climate change, nuclear energy and medicine, just to mention a few. It is a prerequisite to any career in biology, so a solid understanding of its basics is important.

Chemistry is my favorite subject to tutor. I studied Chemistry at college and even worked in an oil refinery. All students should take Chemistry, since it is the industrial basis for much of our society. Understanding chemistry is important as it has a bearing on so many areas of our lives.....nutritional needs, pharmaceuticals, climate change, pollution, air quality, environmental toxins. pesticides, drinking water standards and so on. Besides tutoring the subject, I work with students to improve their study and test-taking skills.
Computer Programming

I've coded in a number of languages for 20+ years. These include, Fortran, C, C++, Java, Javascript. Python, Visual Basic, In most cases I've been working on research projects solving a particular scientific problem. In addition, I've extensively used many different data sources and graphical output.
COOP/HSPT

For over 10+ years I have tutored and prepared middle students for high school entry exams, including COOP, HSPT, ISEE, SHSAT and TACHS. I primarily work with students in 6th to 8th grades. I conduct in-school tutoring classes with numerous students and also one-on-one sessions, presently online.

I have used a PC or Mac for most of my life., so I am familiar with their operating systems and using them for a variety of tasks These include word processing, email, spreadsheets, photo editing, files and folders and website design and maintenance. I'm also experienced with a number of computing languages. I've taught Introduction to General Computers and their use at the college level.

I have worked in the fields of Geology, Earth Science and Environmental Science for most of my career, Besides tutoring these topics on a one-on-one basis, I have taught Earth Science at the high school level and conducted research at the highest academic levels, including publishing scientific papers.

Excel (and Google Sheets) is probably the most useful software tool used in the business environment today. I have taught MS Office, including Excel, at the college level and individually tutored Excel students studying for MBAs and Finance degrees, at major universities. I personally use Excel in my business applications and have assisted other businesses in using Excel to solve their specific needs.

MS Word is probably the most widely used document preparation tool in the business environment today. I have taught MS Office, including Word, at the college level and individually tutored many Word students. I personally use Word for all my business needs, including preparing letters, proposals, reports, etc. and have assisted other businesses in using Word for their specific needs.

I have tutored Physical Science to middle school students for more than 10 years. In a couple of cases, I tutored the students in math and science subjects from Physical Science in middle school all the way to college. I also work with the students to improve their study and test-taking skills. It's important for them to develop these skills at an early age.

Accommodating & Very Thorough Tutor

My daughter absolutely enjoyed her session and couldn’t stop sharing everything she learned. Gordon was kind enough to do an extra half hour to make sure everything was covered. He even sent a link to a book we could purchase for her to study in between her sessions. He came up with a plan for her for the next two weeks. Was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She is currently in her second session with him. Definitely recommend!

Great Finacial/Stock Market Tutor!!!

I went into the stock market knowing absolutely nothing and had no direction. Gordon guided me through the basics and helped me decipher charts by providing great resources, homework, and tutoring.
