I tailor all my instruction to the student. At our first lesson, we will identify your strengths and weaknesses, and based on that we will focus on some combination of openings, middlegames, endgames, general strategy, and tactics. Chess is an extremely valuable skill in and of itself, but also helps greatly with logical thinking, creativity, and deductive reasoning, among other benefits. It's also very fun! My goal is not just to teach chess fundamentals to my students, but more importantly to inspire them to reach their fullest potential.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

We picked Tony as a tutor for my son after looking at his profile and he has been an excellent find. He is smart, and teaches strategy rather than just step moves. He challenges my son to think and then debate which moves are better and why. My son used to play chess before but was not enjoying it much, credit goes to Tony for renewing his interest in chess which is commendable. We are very happy with him and would recommend him.

Awesome Tutor!!!

Reviewing my games and explaining how to maximize each move. Going over basic principles that I have not implemented very well and worked on tactics. I look forward to my next lesson.

Remarkable and deeply effective chess teacher

Tony K. has been tutoring my sixteen year old son, Eddie, for almost a year on a weekly basis - initially in person at a local coffee house and more recently online. Eddie has always been a most dedicated and passionate player of board and other games - the idea behind having Tony tutor him in chess was not only to give him the chance to learn this greatest of strategy games in depth, but also to learn how to think strategically and several steps ahead as well as to study and play out different games and problems in a disciplined manner. Tony has been the perfect chess and strategy teacher and inspiration for Eddie, and has inspired and gently guided Eddie with great intelligence and proper method to a whole new level of play and planning and analysis. Tony's teaching extends far beyond the one hour lesson - he assigns chess problems and historical games to work in between lessons, and has recommended a very carefully selected small library through which he has been guiding Eddie to explore. Tony puts an incredible amount of thought and planning into each lesson - tailoring each one to where Eddie needs to focus. Additionally, Eddie often brings to Tony games he played since the last lesson for a move by move post-mortem and lessons learned. Tony thoughtfully posts notes following every lesson - which are wonderful for me to get a window into the dedicated, superb, and deeply thoughtful lessons he is enjoying so much. It is a tremendous pleasure to see a master chess teacher at work, and to witness the steady and focused progress Eddie is making under Tony's tutelage.

Great experience

My son is quite passionate about chess and reads about it every waking hour. Tony has been excellent in nurturing his interest while making sure he spends time studying/understanding some fundamental principles, as well.

Great tutor

Tony knows his stuff when it comes to chess and my two boys really like him and look forward to their lessons. They would have a session every day if it was up to him. We highly recommend!

Excellent at explaining strategies in detail

Excellent lesson. My son was able to learn a few new strategies from the first lesson. Very clearly presented in detail. Tony also gave some information for my son to review before the next lesson.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Tony has helped my son improve his chess skills significantly. Each lesson covers openings, end games, and tactical puzzles, and includes one or more practice games. Tony is also quite knowledgeable about local tournaments where he himself competes regularly.

Wonderful tutor! Highly recommend.

Tony is very prompt, patient and helpful with my daughter. He is unbelievably knowledgeable about chess, and able to convey that knowledge with ease and grace to a beginner - no small feat. He is impressively patient and very respectful. We would work with Tony every day literally forever if that was feasible.
