I am a patient, full-time tutor with over a decade of experience helping students of all ages succeed in Math, Physics, and Philosophy. I have a Master's Degree in Physics, and as such, I am extremely knowledgeable about a wide range of topics -- from Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Newtonian Mechanics all the way to Group Theory, General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.

My teaching objective is to help my students develop a thorough and grounded understanding of their coursework -- not merely to know how to get the correct answer. With such an understanding, students become self-reliant and learn how to solve new, challenging problems on their own. I have a highly effective teaching method which I have honed over thousands of hours and many years of professional tutoring. Countless of my students have gone on to prestigious universities and graduate schools after working with me.

Right now, my main focus is on helping graduate students and undergraduates. I am most interested in working with undergraduates studying quantum mechanics, advanced classical mechanics, statistical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, general relativity, differential geometry, or differential equations. However, I have many years of experience tutoring lower-level courses (including AP Physics and AP Calculus), and I am happy to share my expertise with students in those courses as well.

I received my MS in Physics from the University of Kentucky, and I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Centre College with a BA in Classical Studies. As a result, I specialize in physics and calculus, but I have a deep pool of knowledge covering a broad range of topics - including logic, philosophy, literature, and many other branches of mathematics.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson. I would love the opportunity to help you improve your learning process and learn to love learning!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Because of my background in physics, I have a large amount of practical mathematical experience and; therefore, I understand the topics covered in Algebra 1 better than almost anything else. More importantly, I have been tutoring high school algebra for a long time and am capable of breaking down the mathematical ideas into simple, manageable pieces. Algebra 1 is the foundation of every math class that comes after it, and I can help students develop a strong foundation.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a fundamental building block for calculus, and I understand this material very well. I have been tutoring high schoolers and college students in Algebra 2 for a long time, so I know how to help students get a firm hold of the subject matter. I am very comfortable with polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, graphing, inverses and composition, factoring polynomials, sequences and series, matrix algebra, and many other topics.
Astronomy

Astronomy

Because of my master's degree in physics, I have extensive experience with all topics in physics and astronomy. I am knowledgeable about Newtonian gravity, orbits, basic cosmology, the physics of stars, and special and general relativity.
Calculus

Calculus

Because of my Master's Degree in physics, I have a large amount of practical and academic experience with all aspects of calculus through an undergraduate level and beyond. In addition, I have been tutoring AP and college-level calculus for a long time, so I know the material that is covered very well and can help students understand it. I am very comfortable with limits, epsilon-delta proofs, the formal definition of the derivative, Riemann Sums, the Fundamental Theorems of Calculus, Taylor series, vectors, partial derivatives, Jacobians, multiple integrals, and many other topics.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Because of my background in physics, I have a deep understanding of many elements of basic chemistry. I am very familiar with stoichiometry, energy levels and electron configurations, patterns and properties in the periodic table, and the fundamentals of laboratory techniques in chemistry. I am not familiar with or comfortable tutoring high-level chemistry (such as physical chemistry or organic chemistry), but I can be of help in lower-level college and high-school chemistry courses.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Because of my master's degree in physics, I have a great deal of practical and academic experience solving a large variety of differential equations. I have studied in detail many methods for solving ODEs and PDEs including separation of variables, undetermined coefficients, integrating factors, series solutions, numerical solutions, Wronskians and Cramer's Rule, and Green's Function methods. I have also studied Sturm-Liouville theory as well as solutions to systems of linear ODEs.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Because of my background in advanced physics and logic, I have a large amount of experience with set theory, group theory, modular arithmetic, and matrix and other non-Abelian algebras. I have also studied a substantial amount of combinatorics and probability theory. I could tutor in the areas of rings, fields, and graphs but only at a basic or introductory level.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is a fundamental part of physics, so I know it very well and have been helping students learn it for a long time. I am qualified to help high schoolers understand Euclidean geometry, and I am secure in my understanding of area, volume, logic, basic proof writing, trigonometry, distance formulae, and the many angle theorems - among other topics. I can also help more advanced students with differential geometry and Riemannian manifolds.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have a Master's degree in physics which focused on quantum mechanics. Most modern branches of physics rely in some way or another on linear algebra, but quantum mechanics especially does since so many problems boil down to finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors or establishing a basis space. I am comfortable with all linear algebra topics including change of basis formulae, diagonalization, Gramm-Schmidt Orthonormalization, quadratic forms, and singular value decomposition.
Logic

Logic

I have a great love for Boolean and First-Order Predicate Logic. I have studied logic several times in both philosophy and mathematics courses, but most notably, I took a class in college on mathematical logic which concluded with a proof of The Soundness and Completeness Theorem of First-Order Predicate Logic and an in-depth examination of the Incompleteness Theorem of Arithmetic. I can help you understand deductions, argumentation, and model interpretations and extensions. I would need a refresher on model theory, the Compactness Theorem, and LST Theorem before I could tutor graduate-level logic, but I am very comfortable with the material taught in most undergraduate courses.
Philosophy

Philosophy

My background in philosophy focuses primarily on Ancient Philosophy (especially 5th Century Athens and the Hellenistic traditions). I am also well-versed in the philosophy of Locke, Kant, and some 20th century philosophers. I can tutor in most philosophy topics including logic, ethics, metaphysics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of science.
Physics

Physics

During the course of study for my Physics Master's Degree, I studied most fields of physics up to and including quantum field theory and relativistic dynamics. I have a very strong understanding of all fields of physics through an undergraduate level (including electricity and magnetism, classical mechanics, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics). In addition, I can tutor in nuclear theory, the Standard Model, and condensed matter and solid state physics at an introductory level.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Calculus was invented to solve physics problems, so I understand pre-calculus (the first step on the road towards more advanced topics) very well because I have a Master's in physics. I have tutored high schoolers and college students in pre-calculus for years, so I know how to help students not just learn the information but actually retain it too. I am very comfortable teaching limits, discontinuities, piecewise functions, reading mathematical tables, graphing and graphical interpretations, finding the equations of lines and other polynomials, exponentials, trigonometry, and the formal definition of the derivative.
Probability

Probability

Because of my master's degree in physics, I have a large amount of practical as well as academic experience with the study of probability and statistics. I also have experience tutoring high school- and college-level statistics, so I am familiar with the topics that are usually covered and the common pitfalls.
Quantum Physics

Quantum Physics

Because of my master's degree in physics, I am very familiar with quantum mechanics. I regularly help student learn and understand topics in quantum physics related to the Schrodinger Equation, particle in a box, scattering potentials, angular momentum and spin, and three-dimensional quantum physics like spherical harmonics. I am also familiar with specialized quantum topics such as solid state physics, particle physics, physical chemistry, and relativistic quantum physics.
Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics

Because of my master's in physics, I have extensive experience with thermal physics and thermodynamics. I regularly help student learn and understand challenging material related to thermodynamic potentials, PV- and TS-diagrams, calorimetry, and other topics. I am also familiar with statistical mechanics and topics related to quantum statistics, thermodynamic ensembles, and partition functions.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an integral part of both geometry and pre-calculus, which together lay the foundation for mathematical physics. As a result, I understand trigonometry very well. I am extremely well-versed in the uses and interpretations of sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent and all of their inverse functions. I have been using trigonometry and tutoring it for a long time, so I can help students develop a firm hold on the material.
Writing

Writing

My Bachelor's Degree in Classical Studies trained me to critically interpret texts and clearly express myself in writing. I can help students with these same skills by focusing on good writing habits, proper essay structure, and correct grammar and syntax. I believe in helping students understand what they want to achieve with their writing and helping them use their language to reach that goal so that they can write the best version of their paper that is possible.

Incredible Physics and Math Tutor!

You will not find a better tutor than Geoffrey! He worked with me on college-level classes on quantum and statistical mechanics and analytic mechanics. He is incredibly knowledgeable and patient, and can really clarify concepts. He will identify your weaknesses and target them. He's an excellent communicator, does amazingly good exam revision and is familiar with most of the key textbooks in use. He is flexible with schedules and manages to accommodate last minute changes pretty well...and he has a great sense of humor! His math and physics are particularly strong. I would take him again in a heartbeat...he's my go-to tutor from now on!

The Key to My Academic Success in Undergrad

The many semesters I have been with Geoffrey have been invaluable throughout my degree. When I first started with Geoffrey I was really struggling academically and on the verge of needing extra semesters. Through his patient, clear, and supportive approach to teaching I have been able to turn my academics around, with academics strong enough for internships, full time offers, and even a Master's degree. His method of teaching was by far the best I've experienced while looking for academic support. He is the reason I was able to understand and succeed with concepts and topics that just did not click in regular university lectures. I really can't put into words just how much Geoffrey has helped me. I would not be where I am today without his continuous support!

Differential Equations with Geoffrey

Even though I had missed out on the first half of my 4 week class, I was worried I was going to overall fail this Differential Equations course. This is already a challenging class because it dealt with so many rules and methods, but Geoffrey was very patient with me and gave me a crash course on the stuff I missed out on and wasn't familiar. Because of Geoffrey, I was able to pass my class with a B and received an 80% on my final! If I had come to Geoffrey sooner, I'm sure I would've passed with an A in the class! Geoffrey sent me lots of helpful information after the fact and it all came in handy. I strongly recommend to invest your mornings or evenings getting tutored by him and you'll gain exponentially!

Amazing physics tutor!!

Geoffrey is a brilliant, extremely kind, patient, and all-around amazing physics tutor. I'm behind in my Physics I class and have been all semester. After just a few sessions I feel like I'm quickly getting on track. Geoffrey knows the ideas I'm learning deeply so he can pivot between so many different ways of explaining things, depending on what I'm looking for and he takes the time to coach me on how to set up problems, the necessary background, and why things are set up the way they are.

Geoffrey is a godsend!

Geoffrey helped me reinforce my problem-solving skillset with regards to electricity and magnetism over the course of about two weeks. With his help, I went from struggling to understand some of the concepts and most of the math taught in class, to being able to confidently attack every kind of problem that was thrown at me during my final. Geoffrey was able to help me understand the concepts at an intuitive level, and help connect the equations we used to the concepts we were discussing. He is also incredibly skilled in teaching you to break a problem down into smaller parts, and helping you see how those parts fit into the big picture of the problem. I cannot recommend Geoffrey enough!
