A quotation hanging in my classroom reads: "The whole world opened to me when I learned to read." I teach because I know the power and joy of reading. I know that students who love to read will learn to read and will feel successful in school. As a teacher I am committed to student learning as well as my own. I read and listen to information about the latest reading research so I can deliver better instruction year after year. I also have experience innovating engaging activities for students to connect content areas and supplement existing curriculum.
I have taught first graders to read for six years in a public school setting. I am also certified as a reading specialist in the state of California to continue to support our earliest readers. I know the strategies that beginning readers need and can support students in developing their reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. I follow the latest research in learning how to read.
Teaching students to read and write requires a strong foundation in phonics which I taught in Chicago Public Schools for 3 years, and for the past 6 years in California. I am currently serving as the Literacy Lead for my school. I have taught students at a variety of levels with phonics and adapted instruction to meet individual needs.
I am a certified teacher in California. Having taught first grade, I am familiar with the skills and competencies students need to be successful.
