About William

During my fifteen years of teaching first-year college English, I have often heard students say on the first day of class that they are just not good writers. They seem to think that writing ability is something you are either born with or fated never to have. But writing is a craft, and, like any craft, mastery of it begins with the right tools. I'll provide you with the tools, not the wooden rules of grammar and syntax but knowledge of the underlying logic of good sentences. Soon you'll find that, with a little bit of practice, you won't have to reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to write. You might even begin to enjoy it.

In addition to my BA degree from Lehigh University (where I majored in History and was admitted to the National History Honorary Society--Phi Alpha Theta), I have two graduate degrees in English: an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida Atlantic University and an MA in Literature from California State University Los Angeles, from which I graduated with honors and was admitted to the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Also, I have authored numerous articles in academic journals, college journals, and local newspapers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Florida Atlantic University, where I served as editor of the school's Coastlines literary journal. After that I obtained a Master's degree in English from California State University Los Angeles, where I achieved graduate honors. I have published articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, college journals, and newspapers.

Vocabulary

I have two master's degrees: an MFA in creative writing and an MA in English. Since obtaining my first master's in 2006, I've taught some 50 English courses, including foundational courses that stressed vocabulary building. Since graduating from CSULA in 2014, I have been serving as a volunteer at 826LA, a nonprofit tutoring organization for reading and writing.

Writing

Teaching composition is my first love. All told I have taken three graduate courses in how to teach writing, from fiction to composition.
