Hi. I have taught in LAUSD for 20 years. Since I am credentialed in Special Ed, I can help in all core subjects. My training has also allowed me to develop expertise in many various teaching strategies - which means I can figure out why you are struggling with certain subjects as well as teach you how to overcome those struggles.

When my daughter was learning to read, we discovered that the traditional reading techniques weren't working, so we found her a reading specialist. She went from struggling with "Frog and Toad" in March, to reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in a week that November. As a teacher, I knew I had to employ these techniques in my own classroom. I took the training the summer between and started my students on it immediately that fall. I knew it would work, because it was so successful on my child. However, I had no idea how successful it would be with my students. The growth was undocumented. That year, the minimum student increase in reading was three grade levels. And, I had students who increased from 5 to 7 grade levels, allowing them to move to a general education setting. Woo-hoo.

It was then that I was asked to teach my colleagues how to use these techniques. As you can imagine, it was quite successful with the general ed population. I've tutored using these techniques with great success for all types of students. The best part, it's fun. And easy.

I also write professionally. I can help students structure non-fiction essays as well as build believable characters inside a fictional story structure.

I was a theater major in college with a minor in English. I’m quite familiar with the bard as well as analysis of scripts/stories, grammar, and old English vocabulary. I actually have a Shakespearean dictionary.

Reading

I have been a credentialed teacher with the State of California for 20ish years, teaching in both Los Angeles Unified School District and Pasadena Unified School District. I specialize in English with an emphasis in reading and writing. I am a Reading Therapist with anecdotal evidence of a minimum 3 grade level gains for the majority of my classroom students. I have specific strategies for reading comprehension, spelling, and writing, both narrative and analysis. As a Special Ed teacher, I have developed and learned strategies to help all students understand directions as well as execute those directions.

Knowledgeable and FUN!

First session left our son happy to get work ready for next meeting. How often does that happen? Theresa had studied our needs prior to our meeting. Knowledgeable and FUN! Thank you

Patient , polite and knowledable

I like her knowledge on working with kids that have ADHD. I look forward to seeing her teaching approach and getting my son up to grade level reading. Her ideas and goals where the things I was looking for in a tutor for my child. I can't wait to see my son reading at his grade level
