I received a Ph.D. in physics from Boston University and was a research scientist at Caltech. As a Ph.D. in Physics and former Math competition Champion in China, I have a strong background in math and easily scored 800 in SAT Math and 36 in ACT Math. From a teacher’s family, I also enjoy teaching students and helping them improve.
Prior to 2014, I taught college Calculus classes online for UC Santa Cruz. I’ve also taught at different learning centers for SAT and AP math and physics courses, plus one-on-one tutoring. I received the highest student evaluations and was the best-paid instructor. I've worked with premier tutoring companies and was their "go-to" guy when it comes to difficult and advanced math and physics subjects. Since 2014, I’ve tutored full-time on my own, for middle school, high school, and college students. Many of the high school students went on to top universities, such as Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, Brown, Cornell, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UChicago, Duke, and Johns Hopkins.
For my teaching style, I believe that each student is different, and when I first meet him/her, my first task is to identify his strengths and weaknesses in the subject. Then we work on his weakness by starting with concrete, simple examples. With my advanced degree, I can view the whole math or physics from a high vantage point, see the big picture clearly, and how different parts fit together. Through my interactive and give-and-take tutoring method, I'm able to pass on my knowledge and insight to the student and help him build up his skills and confidence.
For SAT prep, I've done all official SAT math questions with the new digital format, and am thoroughly familiar with digital SAT content and styles. I have worksheets based on these questions, and from the many students I've worked with, I know the mistakes they'd likely make, and how to help them avoid the common traps/pitfalls. This practice has helped students tremendously.

Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is my favorite math subject, also the most requested one for tutoring. For 3 years, I'd taught college Calculus classes online for UC Santa Cruz. Calculus is a crown achievement of human intelligence, can also be a lot of fun when it's done right. For the past 11 years, I tutored many high school students regularly for AP Calculus, most of them got 5s on the AP exam. I also tutored many college students for Calculus 1 to 3: local students from PCC, USC and online students from Stanford, UPenn, UChicago, Notre Dame. All of them achieved A or B in their classes.
Chinese

Chinese

I was born in China and grew up there until college graduation. It is my mother tongue and I possess excellent writing skills in Chinese too. my wife is from Beijing so I still speak Mandarin on a daily basis. Though I'm a math and science guy in general, I have a talent for language too, as I picked up conversational English quickly after coming to US for grad school. I was able to make many American friends and speak English fluently without accent. While in grad school, I tutored one of my office mates to speak Mandarin since he had a Chinese girlfriend, and was able to get him up to speed in daily conversations. Since I'm originally from China, rest assured that the Chinese you learn from me is authentic, not merely second-hand Chinese taught in America. You will also get to know Chinese culture, customs and latest trends, as I still visit China often and stay in touch with the development there.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Differential Equations was a basic course I took in my sophomore year of college, and I got an excellent score on it. It is a required course for all physics students and used in daily physics calculations. I have a BS and PhD in Physics.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have a BS and PhD in Physics. I have high scores in many discrete math courses, like probability, combinatorics, graph theory. Discrete math is used in many physics applications, especially statistical physics.
GRE

GRE

Make no mistake about it, GRE Quant is getting harder and harder! and you can not just rely on the available prep materials on the market. The best way to study is to practice the actual questions from recent tests, as no other non-official materials come even close. I have a huge collection of recent REAL GRE questions (in clear screenshots form), by using these questions I've helped many students to achieve high quant scores. With my guided practice, you can catch up with the latest trends in GRE quant, and learn the best approach to solve these ever more challenging problems. These real questions have high repetition rates, some students told me that 20-30% of their exam questions were from the recent tests they practiced with me.
ISEE

ISEE

I'm experienced in math test prep, and have tutored students on ISEE math section.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have a Ph.D. in Physics from Boston University, and a BS in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China. Linear Algebra is a required course for all physics students and I've applied it to many physics fields such as quantum mechanics, so I know both the theory and application sides of the subject. For the past 10+ years, I've tutored students from Occidental College, Upenn, UCLA, Clemson, ASU, TexasAM, CalState, and many community colleges, helping them improve from D to B, and from B to A. In some of these colleges linear algebra is considered to be the toughest math class. Linear Algebra is one of the most important college math classes, and it's applied widely to science, engineering and AI. It may seem abstract and tedious for the beginning students. With my guidance, you'll know why and how of the subject from the inside out.
MCAT

MCAT

I've taught many college physics classes, and tutored students for MCAT Physics to achieve high scores. MCAT Physics questions are different from regular college physics questions, as they're more conceptual in nature, no complicated calculations involved. With my guided practice, you'll know how to apply your knowledge of physics to different passage-based questions and independent questions.
Physics

Physics

I've tutored many high school students regularly for AP Physics 1, 2 and C, most of them got 5s on the AP exams. I also tutored many college students: students from PCC, USC , UCLA, CSUN, UChicago, Yale for Undergrad and graduate physics classes. All of them achieved A or B in their classes. Testimonials from students I tutored: "My tutoring sessions with Dr. Chen were just what I needed to understand the complex world of physics. Dr. Chen Is extremely knowledgeable about physics and was able to explain the concepts in a way that I could better understand them. He thoroughly goes over the material and provides examples for each topic. He's professional and has also been very flexible with my schedule. Thanks so much! You're a life saver!" R. D., senior at UCLA "Dr. Chen is a very knowledgeable, patient, fun-loving and easygoing tutor. He really helped me understand the fundamental concepts of physics. With his help, I felt more confident and retook the SAT II Physics test. After working with Dr. Chen for one month, my SAT II Physics score has gone up to 770 from 640. Dr. Chen is awesome and I would recommend him to anyone seeking help in physics!" J. D., senior in high school who went to Bowdoin College
Probability

Probability

As a Ph.D. and one of the highest ranking math tutors on Wyzant, I've tutored many college students on probability, with students from UPenn, Cornell, UCLA, UToronto, helping them to achieve A or B in their classes. I've coached job seekers to prepare for quant interview questions on probability and combinatorics and helped them gain internships and job positions.
SAT Math

SAT Math

For SAT math, I can easily score 800 in half of the required time, while doing everything in my head. But that's not the most important thing. The point is that I know all the "tricks" and "traps" of SAT math, and can clearly communicate with students the best approach to different types of problems. The digital SAT math is harder and more unpredictable, so it's important to practice the official/real questions and know the variations and common "traps" for these questions. During the past 15 years, I've tutored many students on SAT math, by mostly practicing with them the real SAT tests that I've collected, and pointing out the best way to solve different kinds of problems. For students really good at math, I teach the algebraic or "textbook" way to solve problems. For students not super comfortable with algebra, I teach the "backdoor" or "Desmos" way to get to the answers. As a result, all of my students have improved noticeably, from low 600s to high 600s, and low 700s to high 700s, a few of them even got the full 800. I've collected many recent REAL Digital SAT problems up to the current month, which are NOT available in the public domain. I've made worksheets on different topics with these questions so we can target specific weak areas. They are the real deal, and you can practice with my guidance and catch up with the latest test trends. SAT math is different from your standard school math test, in that it doesn't really require advanced math skills, such as trig equations or matrices. Rather, it adds "twists" to regular math problems and dresses them up to look more difficult than they really are. The only way to get better is by working through tons of past problems until you've seen most of the "twists" and won't be surprised at the questions they throw at you. Me personally, I've gone through all available digital SAT math questions since the new format took place in 2024, and am thoroughly familiar with its content and variations.
Statistics

Statistics

For the past 15+ years, I've taught high school students AP Statistics, and helped them to achieve 5 or 4 on the AP exam. I tutored college students for introductory and advanced statistics classes, students from Cornell, Upenn, UChicago, UCLA, USC, UFlorida, UToronto, Calstate and many community colleges, helping them to get A or B in their classes.

Most helpful tutor I have ever had

I am extremely proud to write this letter of recommendation for Dr. Wei C, who became my AP Calculus BC tutor since late August 2012. Without a doubt, Dr. Wei is one of the best teachers and mentors I have humbled to learn from in all my high school career. A quick thinker with a precise eye for detail, Dr. Wei is a master of math. He has cleared all of my qualms and fear about calculus, a subject I have continually struggled with until he came along. What amazes me the most about Dr. Wei is how knowledgeable he is about the many different subjects in calculus, even the most obscure ones. In all of the tutoring sessions so far, he can easily and with finesse discuss the precise steps of problems without even referencing a book. Dr. Wei discusses how to solve a problem in a comprehensible manner yet leaves room for me to work out the rest of a problem. This effective style of teaching not only helps me retain more of the information, but also helps me become a better student and learner. Dr. Wei has a passion for the subject that has inspired me to challenge myself by taking much more difficult mathematics subjects when I leave for college in Fall 2013. In many occasions, he goes beyond that of a normal tutor by studying the specificities of my textbook. Each textbook is different, so by doing this, Dr. Wei can assist me in all aspects of calculus. I am so impressed by his wide range of skills and dedication. In addition, Dr. Wei is very generous with his time and energy. He is exceptionally willing to help me even in the odd hours of the night. Dr. Wei promptly responses to all of my emails and explains the steps of a problem in full, even scanning in pages of his work when words aren’t enough. When my schedule changes, Dr. Wei is always there to accommodate. I always look forward to weekly tutoring sessions because I know every hour brings a whole plethora of new information. Dr. Wei has made a tremendous impact to my work and will undeniably impact your work. He is dependable, passionate, and is in tune with the needs of his students. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Wei to anyone wanting efficiency, organization, and diligence.
