I hold a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from UCLA and have devoted my career to helping students develop a deep understanding of science while becoming confident, independent learners. I taught biology and related courses at the college level before spending more than fifteen years teaching at Westridge School, an independent college preparatory school in Pasadena, where I also served as Science Department Chair. I have taught a wide range of courses, including Biology, Advanced Biology (AP Biology equivalent), Honors Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Ecology & Evolution, Research in Science, and scientific writing. I currently serve as a Lecturer in Writing at the California Institute of Technology, where I teach first-year students to become clear, effective communicators.
Throughout my career, I have worked with students ranging from high school through college in classroom, small-group, and one-on-one settings. My teaching emphasizes understanding rather than memorization, helping students connect concepts, think critically, and communicate their reasoning. I believe students learn best when they actively solve problems, ask questions, and explain their thinking, so I tailor each lesson to the individual student's goals and learning style. Whether preparing for an AP exam, mastering challenging coursework, improving scientific writing, or conducting independent research, I strive to build both competence and confidence.
In addition to classroom teaching, I have mentored numerous independent research projects and helped students develop the analytical and writing skills necessary for success in advanced STEM courses. My goal is not simply to help students earn higher grades, but to help them become thoughtful, curious learners who can apply their knowledge long after our tutoring sessions have ended.
