Hello! My name is Alex, and I am a long-time mathematics educator. I have tutored math for over 13 years, from high school algebra and geometry through differential equations and probability theory at the college level. My Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Creighton University and my PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Southern California have prepared me as an expert in the subject I love to share. And while my work is in mathematics, my true passion is in teaching: sharing mathematical knowledge in a kind and helpful way, and celebrating the process of learning mathematics with others.
I have taught students one-on-one and in group sessions, including home visits, libraries, and classrooms. My sessions are in-person and virtual. Most of my experience has been with high school students ages 14-18, and I have also worked with college students ages 18-22, including five years as a mathematics teaching assistant at the University of Southern California. I strive to assist students as they gain comfort with material and learn that they are capable of rising to the challenge that mathematics provides. I find that presenting information as a story helps my students learn best; my educational background and professional experience across various industries (including atomic laboratories, aerospace facilities, and federal statistical agencies) helps me create interactive problems from the worlds of physics, chemistry, engineering, and finance.
In my tutoring sessions, I will not simply state math facts for you to memorize. I will bring a personal touch by sharing puzzles, scenarios, and applications I have crafted to suit your learning needs. I will offer my insights in conversation with you to help illustrate mathematical ideas and concepts clearly, concisely, and memorably. And I will create an environment where you can feel comfortable to bring challenges big and small without fear of judgment. I hope we can discover more about this beautiful subject matter and find joy in learning together!
