Hi! I'm Alexandra, a Stanford math and CS major with 5+ years of experience tutoring math, physics, computer science, and SAT/ACT.
In addition to teaching K-12 math (from arithmetic to algebra to calculus), I have extensive experience working with students looking to challenge themselves beyond the school math curriculum. I led a team of 20+ students to place sixth at chapter MATHCOUNTS, the nation's largest middle school math competition. I've also designed AMC 8/10/12 and Math Kangaroo classes and worked 1-on-1 to boost AMC scores by 30+ points. Outside of contest math, I’ve taught advanced enrichment math to students in grades 3-6 at UCLA's math circle and led online sessions for dozens of students via the National Museum of Math. I also served as a teaching assistant for Stanford's introductory computer science classes, leading a weekly section to teach students Python, C++, data structures, and algorithms from the ground up.
My teaching style is inquiry-driven: students retain what they discover for themselves far better than if they are force-fed information. By reinforcing new concepts with lots of individually tailored examples, I help each student build problem-solving intuition and meta pattern recognition. I focus on filling gaps in what a student could absorb via self-study-by breaking down complex concepts, providing motivation behind different solutions, explaining questions from the perspective of a test designer, and helping students analyze and learn from their mistakes.
I earned a perfect score on all four sections of the ACT; received 5s on AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science A, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature, and AP English Language; and scored in the top 5% of the AMC 12 and AIME.
The spark in the eyes of my students when they discover the solution to a particularly elegant problem brings me full-circle to the aha! moments I’ve experienced while exploring math — a sense of thrill and wonder I hope to share with you.
