Are you struggling in a difficult course and need some guidance?

I typically work with high school and college students primarily in math, physics, chemistry, and statistics. I have a BS in math and physics from Yale and a PhD in statistical physics from Harvard. I'm excellent at being able to explain challenging concepts to people of all levels and abilities. As of this writing, I’ve tutored over 3000 hours with Wyzant and have over 1000 five star ratings. and focus on problem solving (including proofs in proof-based courses) to help you develop your skills. I have a variety of different styles of teaching that can be customized to the way you learn best. My sessions are very efficient, but I can slow down when needed to, for example, understand how you are thinking about a concept so I can figure out what you are missing, or to explain a concept with which you are having difficulty. I really enjoy helping people!

I’m able to help with challenging material: my undergraduate GPA was 3.94 and my graduate GPA was 3.97. I was one of 4 US students chosen to attend the International Chemistry Olympiad, and was top 20 at the US Physics Olympiad and top 50 at the US Math Olympiad.

I can help in a variety of scenarios, whether you are struggling or are looking to excel or for a deeper understanding, if you are preparing for AP exams or SAT / GRE / GMAT / MCAT, or are preparing for competitions such as the AMC or AIME, F=ma, or the Chemistry Olympiad. I also frequently have students who just want to learn something new or are planning to go back to school in a new subject and need to review. Feel free to reach out and we can discuss the situation!

AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

When in high school, I was among the top 50 in the US at the USAMO, which is the test that they give top scorers on the AIME (which in turn is the test they give top scorers on the AMC). I frequently help students prepare for the AMC 8, 10, and 12, as well as the AIME, and have had numerous students successfully qualify for the AIME.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I was a teaching assistant at Yale in a differential equations class. I tutor both in ordinary differential equations and in partial differential equations. For partial differential equations, my focus is on analytical solutions; I'm not able to help in a course that is highly focused on numerically methods.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete math can contain many topics. I am knowledgeable about group theory, ring theory, field and Galois theory, combinatorics, probability and statistics, set theory, number theory, and some portions of graph theory. PhD in statistical physics at Harvard. I'd be happy to look over your problem set to confirm I can be helpful!
Finite Math

Finite Math

Finite math can contain many topics. I am knowledgeable about group theory, ring theory, field and Galois theory, combinatorics, probability and statistics, set theory, number theory, and some portions of graph theory. PhD in statistical physics at Harvard. I'd be happy to look over your problem set to confirm I can be helpful!
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I tutor linear algebra at the undergrad level, both for proof based courses and non-proof based courses. I've also taught several people linear algebra who wanted to learn it independently (while not taking a course).
Physics

Physics

I tutor across an array of physics topics including general physics - both calculus and algebra based, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics at an undergraduate level, as well as high school physics and AP Physics 1, 2, and C (mechanics and electricity and magnetism). I also tutor mathematical methods in physics as well as a variety of math classes.
Quantum Physics

Quantum Physics

My PhD was at the interface between quantum physics and statistical physics. I frequently tutor quantum mechanics at the undergraduate level (both quantum I and II). If you are interested in tutoring at the graduate level - ask first and we can discuss.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

I frequently tutor advanced math classes including first semester real analysis, as well as courses called "Advanced calculus" which are quite similar (and also proof based). I tutor complex analysis, abstract algebra, and advanced probability courses as well,
Statistics

Statistics

I'm excellent at probability and statistics; I was top 50 in the US Math Olympiad and am good with tricky probability questions. I tutor from elementary statistics and AP statistics to selected graduate level classes in the subject.

Phenomenal Tutor

Raphael's tutoring sessions were a game-changer for my daughter. She went from being confused by several physics concepts she was learning in high school to being "crystal clear" (her words) and confident on those topics. She said that, because he's just a nice and patient person, the lessons were quite enjoyable, too. We could not recommend this tutor more highly!

Very knowledgeable and prepared

My son had just one session so far with Raphael and felt it was immediately helpful as he prepared for his final in honors geometry. We plan to book again! Thank you!

Physics Mechanics Tutor

I really appreciated Raphael’s support for my Physics Mechanics exam. He was very helpful in breaking down the concepts so I could understand. Thank you very much!

Excellent Physics Tutor

Raphael has provided excellent tutoring services for my daughter, who is a college pre-med student in an extremely challenging physics class at a top-10 university. He is kind, professional, knowledgeable, and flexible in his approach to teaching new concepts. She is very grateful for his assistance.

Great tutor!

Raphael worked with my son to help him with some last minute studying for an IM3 test. He was very patient, and was able to help my son figure out what he was doing wrong on some of his problems. I think he really helped my son to understand the concept, and prepare for the test.

great lesson!

Thanks for taking the time to explain everything! You cleared up a lot of uncertainty I had. Looking forward to working with you again.

Brilliant and kind

Raphael understands advanced statistics so deeply that he can explain concepts at any level -- from the general to the mathematical proof -- seemingly without effort. When I don't understand something, he can quickly identify what's tripping me up and clear the way for me. I felt lost in my graduate Bayesian stats class, but after one 2-hour session with Raphael a week ago, I am not having trouble anymore.

Knowledgable, patient, and able to explain college statistics to a struggling student

My daughter was struggling with college statistics, and was in danger of not passing the class after taking an incomplete. She worked with Raphael who helped her to understand the concepts, complete all assignments, and do well on the final, thus enabling her to pass the class. He made her feel comfortable, and explained things in a way that she understood. He was the second tutor we hired, and he was the absolute best person for the job. Thank you!

Great pre-calc teacher

Raphael taught pre-calc BC to my daughter who is neurodivergent and had a teacher that had an unorthodox way of teaching the subject. Raphael is not only extremely knowledgeable but he was also very patient when teaching, helping her identify her mistakes and try to solve them on her own. We are grateful for all the time, effort and dedication Raphael put into his work.

As advertised

My son needed last minute help with discrete math homework that was due the next day. Raphael generously agreed to help even thought it was his day off . Within 15 minutes he explained how to solve the problem and only charged for that time. Thanks Raphael!

Tutor responded:

Please be advised that I could only charge this way due to special circumstances. If you only have a small amount of material, let's discuss it before you book an hour's session. If you book a regular hour's session, I'll have to turn down other people for the slot so will have to charge for the full hour.
