Bio

I majored in math and physics at Yale, and received a PhD in statistical physics at Harvard. I have also worked in scientific areas throughout my career. As such, I have very deep expertise in math and science, and I enjoy passing that on to students.

While I am new to Wyzant, I am not new to tutoring and teaching. I first began tutoring 30 years ago and have continued to do so over the years, with a mixture of formalized tutoring, classroom teaching, and job-based training. I enjoy...

I tutor across an array of physics topics including general physics - both calculus and algebra based, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics at an undergraduate level, as well as high school physics and AP Physics B and C (mechanics and electricity and magnetism). I also tutor mathematical methods in physics as well as a variety of math classes.

Math

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I was a teaching assistant at Yale in a differential equations class. I tutor both in ordinary differential equations and in partial differential equations. For partial differential equations, my focus is on analytical solutions; I'm not able to help in a course that is highly focused on numerically methods.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Discrete math can contain many topics. I am knowledgeable about group theory, ring theory, field and Galois theory, combinatorics, probability and statistics, set theory, number theory, and some portions of graph theory. PhD in statistical physics at Harvard. I'd be happy to look over your problem set to confirm I can be helpful!

Excelent tutor!

Raphael explained to me some topics on Calculus 1, such as mean value theorem, finding extrema and inflection points of a function and on showing that a solution satisfies a differential equation. He goes right to the point, in a very direct, logical and organized way so you can follow step by step of what he is explaining. His notes are very organized as well. He could help me understand the review exercises I had to study and I am confident to do the final exam now.

Excellent, knowledgeable, patient tutor.

The challenges of Covid and not being able to take classes in person has made my business calculus class especially hard for me. I need this class to graduate this summer and Raphael really helped out. I will continue to use his services and I highly recommend him to anyone who needs math or science help.

Thoughtful and knowledgeable, well-versed in ODEs

We reviewed the Wronskian and connected it to linear algebra. We also discussed what it takes to do well in an ODE course. He was also very familiar with the text already which was great.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Raphael taught me about acids and bases and identifying the major species produced in reactions. He was helpful in answering my questions! I was finally able to finish my assignment.

Kind, Clear, and Knowledgeable Tutor

I was having an incredible amount of difficulty with my discrete math course, especially since I was taking it over the summer at an accelerated pace. However, Raphael was able to turn things around entirely. He put in time outside of our lessons to look over the material and problem set I had for the week so that our sessions were as efficient as possible. Furthermore , This meant that not only was always prepared with the answers, but he also had reviewed his own material from when he learned the concepts, and was able to build on what I learned in class. He was always prepared with multiple ways of arriving at many solutions or understanding concepts, so we were able to approach ideas the way that most intuitive for me. With a subject as difficult as discrete math, I was skeptical at how helpful a tutor could possibly be. Complex proofs or combinatorics just seemed out of reach to me, and I didn't think that hearing someone else figure it out would do me much good. However, Raphael approached problems in a way that didn't just teach me the material at hand. More than that he showed me the patterns that existed within questions, so I was able to take what I learned with a single example and apply it more broadly to the rest of the course. More than anything though, our session never felt like a lecture. We were always working together and talking back and forth as I figured things out. Raphael has a great balance between guiding a student and stepping back so they can figure things out. It made for a collaborate process that helped the learning even more. Overall, I cannot recommend Raphael enough, and I am very grateful to have had him throughout my course.

Brilliant. Makes the material easy to understand.

We discussed factorial design, ANOVA, Regression analysis. Breaking the concepts down and showing me, using formulas and examples was helpful. I highly recommend Raphael.

Very, very helpful by being patient with my learning disabilities and by explaining well!

Raphael was excellent at teaching me statistics, particularly basic ideas that are stepping stones to more complex problems. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Knowledgeable and Patient tutor

He is very patient with me. My mind was all over the place but he was able to help me focus and get they the problems. He showed me all the ways to work a problem including by hand which is a lot more work. I am much more confident about my grades as well as the information I'm learning.
