Understanding the whole college application process can be overwhelming for many of you. As an academic counselor at a small private high school, I have experience working individually with students to make the process an exciting and positive one. Having taught high school English for 30 years, focusing over the last few years on AP English, I can assist you with the planning, writing and editing of your essays, including the personal statement for college. As a former AP Language and Literature teacher, I can help with reading and writing assignments and prepare you for the complexities of the AP exams. I will work closely with you, encouraging you to develop your thoughts and ideas and relieving you of some of the stress that you may feel when facing a written assignment or dealing with the various college applications.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Assisting students to navigate the complex and often confusing college application process is something I have been doing as a college counselor at a Bay Area high school for 4 years. As well as helping students create a timeline for their high school years, compile a list of extra curricular activities and achievements, choose the appropriate standardized tests, and explore college options, I provide ongoing assistance with the college essays, proofreading, editing and helping the student produce an essay that responds effectively to the prompt. I have had students accepted at top private and public colleges across the country.
As a former high school English teacher at a bilingual school, I have had a lot of opportunity to assist students with language acquisition and have examined closely the different methodology involved in learning a second language. Having written both the AP Language and Literature curricular for the school, I have a great deal of experience in teaching critical reading, text analysis and essay writing, from drafting, to revising, editing and creating the final product. Assisting students with the sometimes daunting task of writing their College Essay is something I believe I am strong at and have had ample opportunity to do.
Having taught English as a second language to German students and as a German speaker myself, I understand the grammatical structures that are often problematic to non native speakers of English.
As an English major and teacher of over 30 years, I have read, interpreted, and evaluated literary works for a long time. I am familiar with most of the literature requirements in the CA schools and have a strong literary background, as both English and German literature were my majors at university. As well as fiction and non fiction, I love to assist students with poetry analysis, something many are intimidated by. Since poetry is always a component of the AP English exams, it is essential that students learn some strategies to assist them when analyzing poetry
The SAT reading section deals with reading comprehension and sentence completion. I assist students in developing strategies to approach both the short and long passages, which test the student's vocabulary proficiency, recognition of main idea in a passage and understanding of rhetorical and literary devices. We work on strategies including pacing, elimination of wrong answers, contextual clues and skimming for the main idea. Students are given the chance to do some practice tests which we then discuss.
Since multiple choice questions are used to measure a student's ability to recognize and then produce appropriate written English in the SAT test, I work with students with a number of strategies to help them succeed. We focus on basic grammar, word choice and sentence structure since these 3 areas are tested in the multiple choice section. For the essay, students are shown how to examine a question to see what is required and then I take them through the stages of response. We look at examples of strong and weak student essays to see what the strengths and weaknesses are and then the student has the opportunity to write timed essays.
Teaching writing skills has been one of my favorite tasks as an English teacher. Students often have great ideas, but do not know how to formulate them in a structured way. Creating a solid thesis statement, topic sentences, supporting sentences and a conclusion are all necessary in a well constructed essay. The College essay often poses problems for students as they have a hard time reflecting on who they are and how important their individual accomplishments are. I try to help students find their unique voice and the appropriate tone when responding to the essay prompt .
