Hi, I'm Guy! I'm in my last semester at UC Merced as a double major in Applied Math and Computer Science. My coursework has given me a strong background ranging from algebra and calculus to linear algebra, differential equations, and probability.
The most important thing a professor ever told me was, "Have fun, play math." Before college, I learned math the usual way: memorizing, completing repetitive homework, and forgetting it after the exam. Then, I learned to play math. Instead of memorizing, I learned to understand the definitions, identify what information a problem gives, determine what we need to find, and choose the mathematical tools that connect the two. Once I began understanding why the math worked, my performance improved dramatically. That experience now shapes the way I tutor.
I have experience providing one-on-one math tutoring to students at both the high school and college levels. I have worked with students preparing for the "Skip Seven" mathematics placement test, AP Precalculus, and AP Calculus exams, as well as students studying algebra, college-level calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. When tutoring, I work through problems alongside the student and focus on helping them understand why each step works. Rather than simply showing a solution, I ask questions to identify gaps in understanding as to adjust my explanations to that student.
I aim to create a comfortable, and non-judgmental space where students can ask questions and make mistakes. I want students to build the skills needed to transfer their mathematical knowledge and critical thinking skills when approaching any unfamiliar problem. I also hope to show students the creativity and elegance that made me enjoy math in the first place. Solving a difficult problem can actually be fun.
I welcome questions and feedback from both students and parents. Every student learns differently, so I will always adjust my approach to fit a student's goals and learning style. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions
