Hello, I'm Purnima! I received my Bachelor's in Biochemistry and Master's in Biotechnology from Boston University where I taught undergraduate-level courses and spent time tutoring high school level algebra at local charter schools outside of classes. I have always enjoyed teaching from when I worked as a swim instructor at my local YMCA and found that directly translated to the classroom environment. I have had my own mentors and professors instill a love of learning within me and I hope to spread that motivation toward students who find the concepts of Biology and Biochemistry to be intimidating. I know full well how difficult these topics can become but with the right foundations and conceptual clarity, I hope to support students in their pursuit of scientific research.
My teaching approach focuses on building foundational conceptual clarity on biological processes, and providing complex problem sets to understand the applications of this work. I introduce the mechanics behind problem sets and allow students to work through questions on their own, before guiding through solutions. I also believe that each student's learning style is unique and have experience adapting to fit an individual student's needs, as we all come from varying levels of exposure and experience.
I am well versed in the academic foundations of biology as well as the practical aspects of laboratory work as I completed my Master's thesis in host-pathogen interactions during infectious disease, on top of working as a researcher for 2 years at Stanford University on stem cell therapy development. I have extensive experience across topics in biotechnology and can add context for biology coursework to introduce translational applications. I am also equally excited about topics across the field and hope to nurture students' interest in biology regardless of what level they come in with.
I offer a free 15 minute consultation meeting to discuss the needs of each student and how I can best help them in their goals.
