Hello! My name is William, and I am excited to offer tutoring for middle and high school students in essay writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, and related skills. I recently graduated summa cum laude from UC Berkeley with degrees in English and Political Science and will be starting a Master of Studies in English at the University of Oxford.
In high school and college, I encountered peers who disliked writing-intensive courses. Teachers often spent too little time on essay fundamentals, leaving many students feeling lost. I heard versions of the same frustrated question: How can I know if my argument is correct? My fascination with English lies in precisely this challenge of interpretation, and I am passionate about helping others develop their critical thinking skills. My goal is to help students approach challenging texts, strengthen their writing, and express their own ideas.
I have tutored students in reading and writing for the past eight years. In high school, I helped friends and peers with academic and application essays. In college, I served as opinion editor of the Berkeley Political Review, providing detailed feedback on article drafts and leading revision workshops. Working with individuals one-on-one and in small groups, I learned the importance of tailoring instruction to each student. Although general advice can be useful, every person learns and writes differently. As a tutor, I believe in showing students how to assess their own work. The process is vital: knowing where to begin with a difficult passage, how to formulate a thesis, and how to step back to recognize the weaknesses in your argument. I meet students where they are, helping them develop the skills and confidence to become strong, independent writers.
I am happy to discuss how I can help before scheduling a lesson. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!
