I am a semi-retired Software Engineer who has maintained a passion for Mathematics throughout my career. While an Undergraduate at UC Berkeley, I taught Math and French in local High Schools, and Tutored High School students. I enjoy all levels of Algebra and Geometry, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and special areas beyond this. Recently, I tutored and taught at a local Charter School.

My experience has been with students of all ages, from children of friends, work colleagues, everywhere in between, such as Middle and High School levels, some SAT prep, some AMC problem. A Calculus class I taught years ago was described as a “Life Changer” to my 7 students, who all entered UC Berkeley in technical fields. A girl had been declared by her School as a "lost cause” in Math, which I found unacceptable. 8 2-hour weekends later, she got one of the highest scores in the School. I have taught Middle-High School students who were ‘bored’ with the curriculum, so I chose more challenging material, and we all had a blast. 2 twins, 2 bro/sis, 12-13 year olds are all now in Schools for the Gifted. Some students needed a lot of patience and catching up… my personality lines up well with the whole spectrum.

I prefer ‘understanding’ to ‘memorization’, and while it is helpful to commit some basics to memory, derivation of what is needed when needed stems from understanding. I consider myself a ‘Student’ who happens to know a few more things, rather than ‘the Teacher’ who lectures. I welcome lots of questions, and marvel at other perspectives and creative angles each student brings. I prefer to evoke a student’s curiosity and unique way of understanding, upon which to build.
Teaching/Tutoring did precede my 40 year Software Career, but I Tutored throughout, and am now back, doing what I have always loved. To conclude, my favorite moment is that “Ahah !” moment when the student suddenly realizes something that had been missing, a link. Such moments are the best.

Pure Mathematics Major (UC Berkeley), still love Math as much as ever after 40 years of pursuing another career, Tutoring, Teaching Math, Languages, some Physics/Chem. During my Software career, I have tutored Math at all levels, Algebra, Geometry, Trig/Pre-Calc, Calculus, to students of all ages, from Elementary, Middle, and High School, as well as adults, such as from work. While an Undergraduate, I also taught Math and Language classes in local High Schools, Trigonometry, Calculus, and more recently taught Algebra, Geometry (advanced), French and Spanish, at a local Charter School. I look forward to being of assistance, and always, keeping it fun !

French

French

Bonjour ! I am a Native French speaker from several French Regions around the world, so my French is, for lack of a better expression, Metropolitan (Hexagonal), but not rooted there, having grown up and have traveled throughout the French-speaking islands of South Pacific, with my early education entirely in French schools, with a regular recycling of teachers from many French territories and regions. I have lived, worked, and married in Paris, with relatives in Belgium and Switzerland, many friends in the South of France (Provence, Nîmes, Marseille, the Spanish side, etc), so I can turn on various linguistic “switches” when speaking in Tahiti and Canada, although my central lexicon and accent are “flexible” Metropolitan, as, even inside France, not everyone chooses to speak with the Parisian accent and manner, which means that knowing the goal of the student becomes very important. It is always a pleasure to share a different way of thinking with a student, and “This is the way we say it” is not a very helpful teaching technique, whereas trying to translate the French into another language with constructs equivalent to French can help the language make more sense, in addition to shared etymology with English. À très bientôt !

Spanish

Spanish

¡ Hola ! I learned Spanish initially on my own out of a sense of neighborly interest and cultural duty that quickly turned into a deep enrichment by, and appreciation for our Latin cultures throughout all Americas and Spain. Because of this, my teaching heavily emphasizes a conversational language that will work perfectly in multiple Hispanic regions, based on a “neutral” Spanish that can pass anywhere, leaving the student with the ‘homework’ of adapting this language to their eventual destinations. I emphasize absolute clarity of, and foundational reinforcement from grammar, exemplified by some from literary works (perhaps of the student’s choosing), mostly from contemporary sources (of interest to the student), but not just News, along with some Technical language, all at the student’s direction and interests. Amablemente, con todo mi respeto.
