I’m a passionate, outgoing, and experienced math tutor who genuinely loves helping students succeed, not just in grades and test scores, but also in their understanding and confidence. My goal is for students to become more independent and feel proud of their progress. One strategy I use is the Socratic Method, where I ask guiding questions that lead students to figure out a problem, which strengthens their problem-solving skills. When a student is still stuck, I use the “I do, we do, you do” method, where I walk through a similar problem, we try one together, and finally the student solves the original problem. These approaches help students feel prepared for future challenges, not just the next test.
I’ve worked with a wide range of students, from those struggling with foundational math skills to A+ students lacking confidence in their answers or needing an extra challenge to stay engaged. I graduated from Gunn High School in Palo Alto, CA in 2010 with a 4.2 weighted GPA. I currently attend Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, CA as a math and computer science double major with a 4.0 GPA. I plan to complete my bachelor’s degrees and then earn a master’s in teaching to become a high school math teacher. I earned 5s on the AP Calculus BC, Physics C, and Biology exams and a perfect 800 on the SAT II Math Level II.
Since March 2024, I have been tutoring through Foothill College’s Pass the Torch program, helping college students one-on-one in courses from precalculus to multivariable calculus. I completed two quarters of tutor training courses and became a paid tutor in Fall 2024. I also work as a private tutor, recently helping a high school algebra student go from below 47% to passing in under six weeks. I previously volunteered at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, tutoring students from 1st to 12th grade in math and science.
I mainly tutor over Zoom and have a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, and weekends. I also offer in-person tutoring near Palo Alto with COVID precautions.

ACT Math

ACT Math

Success on the ACT Math section requires more than just memorizing formulas; it takes a deep understanding of algebra, problem-solving strategies, and time management. I help students strengthen their foundational skills in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and teach them how to apply these concepts efficiently under timed conditions. I’ve completed tutor training specifically for math instruction, with a focus on helping students of all learning styles retain and apply concepts. I’ve used this training while tutoring students from Algebra 1 through multivariable calculus, and I bring that experience to ACT prep. Many students I work with never learned the “why” behind key concepts, so I focus on building both skills and confidence, empowering students to recognize patterns, avoid common pitfalls, and approach each problem strategically.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Mastering algebra is the foundation for all future math, so I focus on helping students fully understand Algebra 1 concepts, not just get the right answer. I’ve completed tutor training courses specifically for math, learning strategies to help students of all learning styles retain and apply concepts. I've used this training while tutoring students from Algebra 1 through multivariable calculus. Many students I've worked with never learned why a concept matters, so I make sure students build strong foundational skills and understand both the "how" and the "why" behind algebra.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Mastering algebra is the foundation for all future math, so I focus on helping students fully understand Algebra 2 concepts, not just get the right answer. I’ve completed tutor training courses specifically for math, learning strategies to help students of all learning styles retain and apply concepts. Many students I've worked with never learned why a concept matters, so I make sure students build strong foundational skills and understand both the "how" and the "why" behind algebra.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is a culmination of all the foundational math skills, so I focus on helping students fully understand calculus concepts, not just get the right answer. I’ve completed tutor training courses specifically for math, learning strategies to help students of all learning styles retain and apply concepts. I've used this training while tutoring students from pre-algebra through multivariable calculus. Many students I've worked with never learned why a concept matters, so I make sure students build strong foundational skills and understand both the "how" and the "why" behind calculus concepts.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete math starts the fun of logic combined with problem solving, theorems, proofs, and proper mathematical notation. I’ve completed tutor training courses specifically for math, learning strategies to help students of all learning styles retain and apply concepts and I've used this training while tutoring students in all levels of math. I've completed an accelerated level college Discrete Math course with an A+ grade, while helping my classmates who were struggling. Many students I've worked with never learned why a concept matters, so I make sure students build strong foundational skills and understand both the "how" and the "why" behind discrete math concepts.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have experience tutoring first grade through college, and a good foundation in elementary math is the key for success for all future math. I focus on helping students fully understand foundational math concepts, not just get the right answer. I’ve completed tutor training courses specifically for math, learning strategies to help students of all learning styles retain and apply concepts. Many students I've worked with never learned why a concept matters, so I make sure students build strong foundational skills and understand both the "how" and the "why" behind elementary math concepts.

Amazing tutor 10/10!

Rachel is an awesome tutor. Not only is she super patient but she truly cares and wants you to understand the material well. She tests your knowledge and creates practice problems for you to get better and more comfortable with certain concepts! She’s super funny and creates a very safe and welcoming environment. She truly makes math a fun subject to learn. I would definitely tutor with her again and am planning to in the near future for physics! I highly recommend her if you’re struggling with calculus, precalc or any calc related math!!

Makes Math So Easy for a Struggling Kid

Rachel was awesome! She worked with my grandson who has ADHD better than even he could have imagined. I absolutely loved working with her and working worth her only 1 time caused him to feel confident when taking a test at school he said. She is a dream for a kid to work with. Thanks so much Rachel!!

Really Impressed so far!

Rachel is helping my daughter with Algebra II after she struggled a bit with Geometry. My daughter said the following to describe her: "She's really nice, gives great examples, and she's really patient. She's really good at explaining." As a parent of a kid who hated math last year, I'm super happy to have found someone that she trusts. I'll also say that Rachel's post session comments are so so thorough. Nothing but rave reviews so far.

Great tutor - Patient and Understanding

Very flexible with time, tries to accommodate and fully understand whether or not the student needs to learn fundamental concepts before moving on to more complex math.
