About John

Bio

I am a scientist who is extremely passionate about any subject in science and engineering, especially biology, applied mathematics, and data science. I'm in my third year of graduate school at Stanford working on my PhD in Bioengineering under Mark Davis. As a graduate student, I'm performing independent research using human immune organoids for vaccine testing. I'm happy to tutor immunology, or nearly anything else in the realm of science or math!

I love school, and both at Caltech and at Stanford I enrolled in difficult courses because I enjoy an academic challenge, achieving nearly perfect grades. For example, I finished quantum physics, computer algorithms, graduate-level chemical engineering thermodynamics, and machine learning courses all aside from my major in bioengineering. At Caltech I was a Barry Goldwater Scholar, and my Stanford PhD is funded by the National Science Foundation GRFP award.

I have tutored quantitative subjects for the past 8 years, including engineering mathematics, chemistry, physics, and computer science in java, python, C++, or matlab. I have also acted as a course assistant at Stanford and Caltech for courses in molecular biology, systems biology, and data analysis on high-performance computing clusters. Additionally, every summer I lead an 8-week biodesign course for high school students in the Bay Area. In this Stanford Bioengineering Bootcamp program, I guide students as they identify a clinical need and work in teams to prototype biodevice solutions. I would love to bring my extensive studies and past teaching experience to help local students interested in science and engineering.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I am a PhD candidate in Bioengineering studying under Mark Davis at Stanford. Our lab focuses on human immunology. I have a B.S. from Caltech in Bioengineering, and have TA'd for courses in molecular biology, systems biology, and analysis of research data.
C++

C++

I completed CS2: Introduction to Data Structures and Algorithms at Caltech, which was taught in C++ and culminated in developing an AI model to play othello. I am not a software engineer or an expert, but I am familiar with topics like memory management, data structures and object-oriented programming in C++.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Coursework included: Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (Graduate) Chemical Engineering Statistical Thermodynamics (Graduate) 2 or 3 Quarters of Organic Chemistry Biophysical Chemistry Quantum Mechanics
Data Science

Data Science

I have a minor in Information and Data Sciences from Caltech, and have completed numerous courses at Caltech and Stanford including probability models, discrete mathematics, applied linear algebra, machine learning and data mining, computer algorithms, statistical inference, and probabilistic graphical models. I have experience analyzing data in python, R, excel, and SQL, and have machine learning experience in python. I also TA's for a course specializing in research data and computation, where I helped students develop custom analysis workflows on distributed computing systems using SLURM and gitlab.
Physics

Physics

Coursework Included: Mechanics Waves Quantum Mechanics Thermodynamics and Statistical Thermodynamics (Chemical Engineering) Transport Phenomena (Chemical Engineering) Optics Laboratory Electronics (As student and TA) Physical Biology of the Cell Signaling and Mechanics in Morphogenesis Partial Differential Equations and Complex Analysis
Python

Python

In the python language, I have: - Trained a neural networks on the GPU of my own PC both for image segmentation in my own research and for a course in machine learning and data mining. - Optimized the structures of RNA vaccines via a custom random walk algorithm. - Trained Bayesian networks to perform a comparison across models of microbial growth dynamics. - Developed rapid, custom primer design software for overlap extension PCR. - Developed an interactive dashboard for reading out biodevice measurements in real time. - Deployed containerized code for multiple users of my lab on Sherlock, Stanford's HPC. Python is my language of choice, and I am a skilled programmer.
