Hi, I’m Thane and I am an educator who encourages ambitious, imaginative thinking. I am the founder of a forthcoming semester high school called the Planet School and currently an Innovative Teacher Program Fellow at the Nueva School. While I have worn many hats in my career, I am most proud of when I have worked with youth to accomplish something remarkable, like launching a podcast in Mumbai, creating a haunted house that raised $22,000 in one weekend, sailing across an ocean, or launching a Youth Council within local government.
Over an eight year career in media, I was lucky to have several roles at different levels of the industry, including as a reporter on the 2014 India general election campaign trail, an editor, a magazine founder, and a publishing executive. I have previously led the India editions of HuffPost, Business Insider, AdAge, The Weather Channel, and TechRadar.
I bring all of this experience to tutoring with a focus on writing, history, and the humanities. Rather than describe myself, here is a snippet from an email I received from the mother of one of my students on a semester-at-sea program that I was the Lead Educator for:
“...I truly wish, from one educator to another, that you could hear how [student] describes the myriad ways you have challenged her, championed her, celebrated her, and acknowledged her goals and compelling vision she has for the world, her communities, and her life…[student] shares that you are one of those rare individuals who possesses the mindsets and exceptional instincts to bring out the best in people. Nothing you did, said, or pondered over went unnoticed by [student], who has been forever changed from having worked with you.”
My own education took place at Brown University (2009) for a double B.A. with Honors in Development Studies and in Economics, where I received a writing prize for my thesis. I am in my final semester at Montana State University (2023) for a M.S. in Agriculture Education.
