I'm a native English speaker with a Master's Degree in Spanish and a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish Language & Culture, both from Cal State Northridge. I speak, read and write Spanish fluently. Like most people who learn Spanish as a second language, I began studying it as a freshman in high school. In junior college I continued taking Spanish and soon found that I enjoyed those classes more than those pertaining to my major at the time. This prompted me to switch majors from Architecture to Spanish. Before transferring to CSUN I completed an AA in both Spanish and French. At CSUN I obtained my BA & MA in the Spanish language. While the bulk of my graduate studies pertained to Spanish literature, I particularly enjoy the grammar aspect of the language. I've always enjoyed learning other languages and as a non-native speaker of Spanish, I have a firsthand understanding of the troubles and frustrations that accompany its study as a second language.

My son enjoys working on Spanish with James. His test scores and class grade have improved. His anxiety level about his high school Spanish class has markedly decreased, and James is really helping my son conquer this "foreign" language. It's really great to see how he has transformed; from struggling and being frustrated, to feeling much more confident about Spanish. James is great!
Always looking for ways to help our son grasp things easier. Encouraging. Always having available different activities to practice on. Things that help reinforce what he needs to learn. Pushes our son along to move forward with gentleness and positive manner. Very professional. Very positive.
Our daughter really appreciates the time that James take with her to teach Spanish in a very detailed way. He is very organized and knows how to present the material to her so that she can understand it. He really knows how to teach the subject and work with each student individually. She was struggling with Spanish before James started tutoring her and now she understands the class so much better and is starting to enjoy the class. James really knows how to teach!
Thank you so much!
James has been consistent in tutoring my child in Spanish II. He is always prepared and provides supplemental material to address problem areas. He has the experience and knowledge to pinpoint problem areas and focuses on how to improve them. I recommend him to anyone serious about achieving high grades in Spanish or just to gain the basics.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I enjoy learning foreign languages and believe that everyone should speak at least two languages. Myself, I'm a native English speaker and I've studied both Spanish and French. Through these studies, I've come to understand the mechanics of the English language better than I had prior to learning other languages. My experience makes me well suited for Spanish speakers looking to further their understanding of the English language. If that's you then I could be the right tutor for you.
I firmly believe in the importance of learning other languages. Myself, I have studied French and dabbled in Portuguese as well, but Spanish has always been my focus. As someone who learned Spanish as a second language, I have a firm grasp of all concepts relating to grammar and sentence structure and can easily understand the frustrations that come from trying to learn a foreign language. It takes time to learn another language, but the task can be significantly easier when accompanied by someone who's already been through the same.
