I’m Stephen Khanou, a Mechanical Engineer with a B.S. from UC Irvine (cum laude) and an M.S. from Cal Poly Pomona, where I earned a 3.95 GPA. Those achievements mean a lot because they weren’t always easy. In high school and early college, I struggled with STEM subjects until I learned to approach them differently. Instead of memorizing formulas, I focused on understanding the why behind every concept — the intuition, the mechanisms, and the meaning beneath the equations. Once I shifted my mindset, everything changed, and I discovered a passion for helping others make that same breakthrough.

Throughout college, I often helped classmates who felt overwhelmed by calculus, physics, or fluid dynamics. That carried into my professional life as well. For the past six years, I’ve worked as a manufacturing engineer in the aerospace defense industry, applying math and physics every day to solve real engineering problems. This experience allows me to teach not just from textbooks but from practical engineering practice, showing students how concepts actually function in real systems. I enjoy breaking ideas down, going “under the hood,” and helping students build strong fundamentals and real confidence.

I also have a deep love and respect for STEM because it has shaped our world and will continue to shape our future for the better. That belief drives me to share the knowledge and techniques that helped me grow from a struggling student into a highperforming engineer. I know how challenging these subjects can feel, and I also know how empowering it is when everything finally clicks. With the opportunity to tutor here on Wyzant, I’m excited to help students understand the “why” behind STEM and reach their goals. Thank you for considering me as your tutor.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I hold a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, giving me an advanced, rigorous foundation in mathematics, calculus, and analytical problem-solving. With extensive experience breaking down complex technical concepts, I specialize in helping students build problem-solving confidence, master difficult course material, and achieve their academic goals.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I hold both a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, where I completed extensive coursework in Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Numerical Methods, and advanced applied mathematics. My graduate research involved modeling non‑Newtonian fluid behavior using ODEs and PDEs, including Carreau‑model rheology and Taylor–Couette flow simulations. I also apply differential equation methods professionally in aerospace engineering for modeling dynamic systems, analyzing transient behavior, and performing computational simulations. I have several years of experience tutoring college‑level math and STEM subjects, and I focus on building strong conceptual understanding and problem‑solving skills.
Geometry

Geometry

I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, which gives me a strong foundation to teach Geometry with clarity and confidence.
Physics

Physics

I hold a master's degree in mechanical engineering and have extensive experience breaking down complex physics principles into clear, digestible steps.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I hold a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, alongside extensive experience in advanced engineering mathematics and mentoring students in STEM subjects. My background enables me to break down complex mathematical concepts—such as functions, trigonometry, and limits—into intuitive, manageable steps. I focus on building strong conceptual foundations and problem-solving confidence so students are fully prepared for rigorous coursework like honors precalculus.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

With a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, I bring strong expertise in advanced math, geometry, and trigonometry.

Excellent PreCalculus Tutor- Highly recommend Stephen

We met with Steven today for help with AP Precalculus, as my son has started falling behind. Steven came very prepared, explained everything thoroughly and in a way my son could understand, and then had him work through problems himself to make sure he was grasping the material. What impressed me most was how engaged my son stayed throughout the entire session. He does not always stay focused easily, but he was attentive, participating, and working the entire time. I can’t thank Steven enough for his patience and teaching style. We had a great first experience and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for help in the subjects he tutors!

Knowledgeable, Dependable, Highly Recommend

Stephen was an outstanding physics tutor for our son, who was taking a very accelerated physics class and preparing for an important exam. We are so grateful we found him! Stephen has an incredible ability to take difficult physics concepts and explain them in a simple, clear way that actually makes sense. Because our son’s class moved so quickly, it was especially important to have someone who could identify where he needed help and get him up to speed without overwhelming him. Stephen did exactly that. He was extremely patient, encouraging, and thorough. He worked through problems step by step, explained concepts in different ways when necessary, and made sure our son truly understood the material rather than simply memorizing how to get an answer. Most importantly, he helped build our son’s confidence going into a very important test. Stephen is knowledgeable, dependable, and genuinely invested in his students’ success. If your child is struggling with physics, preparing for an important exam, or taking a fast-paced course, I would highly recommend him. He is an excellent tutor, and we couldn’t have been happier with our experience!
