**Summer Session**
Summer is a time to sharpen skills, build confidence, and get ahead. Whether your student wants to excel in AP Lang or SAT, deepen their analytical reading, or write with greater clarity and voice, I bring expert guidance and a thoughtful approach. I am here to set them up for a stronger, more self-assured return to school.

With nearly two decades of teaching experience, I have worked with students in grades 6-11. I led the AP English Language program, attending multiple training sessions to refine my expertise. My passion for education is matched by my commitment to helping students grow into confident, skilled communicators. Now a Mensa member, I love bringing curiosity, critical thinking, and a bit of fun into my tutoring sessions.

Writing can often be a difficult skill to hone. Many times we are learning from an English teacher who has chosen their field because they LOVE WRITING, and they love writing because they are good at it. What about the rest of us?

I have had the unique experience of being both. In college, I was a lover of literature, but found out that I wasn't as great of a writer as I thought. I was fortunate to have my UCI English instructor sit with me for hours, going line by line, explaining the basics, the advanced techniques, and the nuances one can use TO THINK while writing. I was taught how to use writing to convey my thoughts, not to use my thoughts to make me seem like a good writer.

I focus on the ‘thinking’ first. Becoming a more methodical thinker can make one a more poignant writer.

One can be a methodical thinker at any age and any level. Being smart is not a prerequisite for writing, but writing CAN MAKE YOU SMARTER. I can show you how.

A good writer lies dormant in all of us. We all have something interesting to say. You already have within you the means, the content, the vehicle with which to write. My Roadmap to Writing can show you that you also have the ability to drive your writing and thinking to new places and new heights.

Art History

Art History

I taught a course called Arts and Cultures for five years. It was basically an Intro to Art History course for high school juniors. We started with cave paintings and rock formations, and we generally made it through the Art deco and modernism periods.
Common Core

Common Core

When Common Core was adopted, I was one of six teachers in my district elected to address the standards and write the curriculum for K-12.
English

English

I have taught English for over 10 years. I started by teaching middle school advanced English Literature classes - sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Then I taught high school advanced English for 8 years - spanning all four grades but mostly focusing on junior AP English Language and Composition.
Grammar

Grammar

I have taught AP English Language for eight years. We focus on the craft of writing for effect and one aspect of that is syntax. Syntax has a lot to do with grammar and how grammar can be manipulated for effect and meaning.
Literature

Literature

I have taught literature to a third grader in home school; sixth, seventh, and eighth graders; and ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders. I have focused primarily on novels, having taught using Great Gatsby, Scarlet Letter, Grapes of Wrath, 1984, Great Expectations, etc many, many times. Novel study is one of my niches.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have been proofreading for over 20 years for both academics and business-related content. I have been an English teacher for over 15 years in various capacities wherein I’ve proofread English essays, namely and most significantly AP Language essays. Because of the nature of test prep for the AP exam I have proofread and scored over 10,000 essays for that class. Moreover, those students prepare personal essays for university when they are in my class and during the months after. I have help many of them through the entire process - brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, and polishing - to create not only polished coherent papers, but poignant ones; essays that evoke emotions in the reader and convey the writer in an extraordinary way.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The SAT writing section tests very specific writing skills during a very short amount of time. I have been training students for over 10 years to write timed essays, specifically for the test taking situation. I have a specific method for planning, organizing, and writing an essay in a short amount of time while still maintaining complexity and voice.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I’ve been a teacher for over 15 years, spanning grade school, middle school, and high school. I have tutored many students with IEPs or ‘at risk’ , And help them with organization, intrinsic motivation, and study skills to improve their grades. Specifically, I homeschooled a third grader for a year, and she went from a C-average student to an A-average student the year after I taught her. When I was in school, I completed the A+ Study Skills program. I am proficient in teaching paraphrasing, summarizing, and notetaking – the three top skills for educational success - alongside organizational skills, Brain Gym, scotopic and dyslexic remedial aid, and nutritional guidance, which prepares the student to study even before they begin.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have facilitated vocabulary study for many years to children ages 8 to 18. I was a homeschool private teacher for a third grader for a year focussing on ELA creative writing as well as literary analysis and vocabulary. My approach to vocabulary is immersive, contextual, and conversational, using pneumonic devices and personalization.

Wouldn't have got an A without her

I'm usually not good at English so going into AP Lang I was worried that I wouldn't get an A. I initially tried some other tutors but I ended up staying with Nicole because of her extremely effective teaching style, much better than any English teacher I ever had. It was only because of her that I was not only able to get a A in AP Lang both semesters, but get a 5 on the AP exam which I never thought was possible. Would highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommend!

My friend recommended Nicole to us. She has been an incredible support for my son in his Honor English class. She is highly experienced with high school writing assignments and knows how to guide students in a way that builds both skill and confidence. What stands out most is her ability to make the process enjoyable in that she brings humor and warmth to each session, and I often hear her and my son laughing while discussing his writing. That positive energy is so important during the stressful high school years, and it has helped my son stay motivated and engaged. We are very grateful for Nicole’s expertise, encouragement, and the fun she brings into learning. My son will be working with her again for AP English this year, and he is truly looking forward to learning from Nicole once more. Highly recommend her!

Nicole is a wonderful AP lang tutor!

Nicole was a wonderful AP lang tutor for my daughter who was not feeling comfortable with even the basics of the exam as taught in her school. Nicole clearly and concisely explained many of the concepts. My daughter felt very comfortable with the concepts after only a few sessions with Nicole as each session was "high yield". She was able to score a 5 on the exam, and there is no question that Nicole was instrumental in preparing her to achieve this score. We are also extremely grateful to Nicole for working around my daughter's very busy schedule during the AP exam week. My daughter wanted to get more practice essays done, and Nicole very kindly did them remotely, providing written remarks and scores even though she did not have a formal lesson. I cannot recommend Nicole highly enough and we are sure to engage her again for my daughter's AP lit class next year.

(5 stars) Outstanding tutor!

Nicole met with my son a handful of times to help prepare him for the multiple-choice section of the AP English Language & Composition exam. He really enjoyed working with her and thought their sessions were productive and helpful. As a result, he felt much more confident going into the test, and was delighted to earn a 5. We will definitely be enlisting Nicole's help for AP English Literature as needed, too. Highly recommend!

Wonderful tutor

My daughter took lessons with Nicole 3 months before her AP English Language and Composition test. Her school doesn't provide AP classes so she knew nothing about the test before she started lessons with Nicole. Nicole was a wonderful teacher, she was very experienced and detail oriented. Each week she assigned several essays for my daughter as homework, and they reviewed it together in the lesson. I can literally see my daughter's improvement each week. My daughter got 5 from her AP test and we are very happy. I would highly recommend Nicole if you are also looking for a tutor for AP Language!

Knowledgeable, reliable and empowering tutor

During his first year of high school, my son Jaxon struggled to independently adjust to high school level writing assignments. He also showed some natural teenage resistance to outside help. As a parent, I knew this combination could lead to painful struggles with everything from literary analysis to SAT prep and eventually college admissions essays. As an engineer, I have learned that effective written communication is a rare and powerful skill that can push any career to greater heights. We are so lucky to have found Nicole to help Jaxon learn and sharpen these skills. Her AP English teaching background provides useful familiarity with subject matter throughout the school year. Her conversational ability makes her relatable and allows her to push past the natural teenage resistance to extra-curricular school work. Most of all, she makes herself available when needed. Over the past year, Jaxon has matured from a student who feared writing assignments to one who is comfortable and very successful writing essays in class. Nicole is also helping him with SAT prep for the upcoming year. We highly recommend Nicole to any student!

Big improvement over AP English Lang

My son is a STEM kid who never paid attention to the technicalities in English language. At the beginning of the year we were really worried about his upcoming AP English Lang exam. After training with Nicole for the entire year (2 hours per week), what a difference it made. My son just came back and said he probably scored most of the MCQs correctly and handled the FRQs with techniques that Nicole had taught him. What a relief! If you are looking for similar result, connect with Nicole. Absolute recommendation.

Amazing English Tutor!

She always gives exceptional feedback, pointing out the things that need the most improvement/enhance the essay most if fixed. Going step by step, it is very clear how to enhance the message I am trying to tell, and helps me understand not only how to improve the current essay but my writing skills in general. I highly recommend her to anyone working on essays!

Outstanding Tutor!

Nicole tutored my son since last school year in Honor English 9 and we could not be happier. She genuinely cares about students and helps learners understand concepts/Knowledge in a friendly environment. My son’s grades improved significantly (from B to A) and he feels confident in his Honor English 10 class now. She conducted an awesome review of Honor English 9 & 10 topics in preparation for the quizzes/final tests. And she helped my son tremendously in writing essays. He felt he was most prepared for success. We would absolutely recommend Nicole for Honor/AP English classes in high school as well as for college students! Thank you!
