Tufts University, magna cum laude
University of Cambridge CELTA St. Giles International (Other)
Academia Latinoamericana de Espanol, Quito (Other)
Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you for considering me! I am a University of Cambridge CELTA-certified English teacher, a magna cum laude graduate of Tufts University, and a former employee of Harvard University. I have tutored and taught adults, youth and children in private lessons, the public school system and through nonprofit educational organizations since 1997. As a teacher, I have three important priorities: to help students to improve their English or Spanish communication and comprehension skills, to build their self-confidence in speaking, reading and writing, and to enjoy learning. I care deeply about my students' interests and goals, and that guides what and how we study. I think that learning should be both interesting and fun. I want my students to love learning as much as I love teaching. I travel throughout San Francisco and the Peninsula and also offer classes at a discounted rate in Pacifica and northern San Mateo county.
As I get to know a student's learning style and personality, I adjust my teaching style to find the best fit for each student. There is no one 'right way' to teach or learn, so I adapt my teaching as I see how each student learns best. I'm a flexible and creative tutor, and I enjoy solving the puzzle of finding the most effective teaching methods for each student. I offer a free one-hour consultation meeting, so I can learn more about potential students and they can learn more about me before deciding to study with me.
As a professionally trained ESL teacher, I can teach students all aspects of the English language including speaking, conversation and presentation, reading and listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing, English literature, and TOEFL test preparation. Please read my subject descriptions for more information on how I can help students in each area.
I am an experienced English Language Arts teacher and am familiar with the California State/Common Core Language Arts Standards. I have taught all aspects of English Language Arts, with a special emphasis on reading comprehension and academic and creative writing. I also teach phonics, word decoding skills and fluency-building techniques for beginning and struggling readers. I have a specialty in the area of academic intervention: supporting students to learn and achieve their educational goals by helping them to discover their preferred learning styles and to effectively utilize learning strategies based on those learning styles. I believe that all students should have the joy of understanding what they read and the satisfaction of expressing their ideas clearly and compellingly in writing.
I have helped scholars and students, from Stanford and UCSF PhD and post-doctoral scholars, to college, high school, and elementary school students, improve their ability to communicate their ideas, insights and creativity in both writing and public presentation. I have edited academic papers, grant proposals and articles for publication and helped students prepare presentations in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, environmental science, psychology, anthropology, English and Spanish (ESL/TESOL) foreign language instruction, English literature, and business and nonprofit marketing. I especially enjoy helping non-native speakers of English communicate complex ideas in writing and speech.
I teach SAT, ACT, CBEST, GED and TOEFL test preparation with a special emphasis on English, reading comprehension, writing and critical thinking skills. These tests measure not just skills and knowledge but test-taking ability, so I help students to develop effective test-taking strategies.
I teach and tutor Spanish, and I am the editor of a Spanish textbook and workbook series published by Internacional del Español in Ecuador. As a Spanish as a Second Language speaker and the editor of a Spanish curriculum series, I can help students understand the crucial differences and intriguing similarities between Spanish and English. I can teach speaking and conversation, reading, Spanish literature, and writing.
I have more than eight years of teaching experience with children, youth and adults. I am patient, friendly, responsible and dedicated to my students' educational progress and enjoyment of learning.
I graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University in 1991, completed advanced level Spanish studies at Academia Latinoamericana de Español in Ecuador in 2011 and earned my University of Cambridge CELTA ESL teaching certificate (TESOL) in 2012 at St. Giles International. I have lived, studied, volunteered and traveled in North and South America, Asia and Europe.
I speak English, Spanish, some French, some Italian, and some Tibetan.

Marie is an outstanding tutor who had an excellent rapport with my son. She is very caring and patient and makes sure that the needs of her students are met. When I was looking for a tutor for my son, I was impressed with Marie's credentials, her responsiveness, and her detailed explanation on how she would be able to help my son prepare for the SAT/ACT Reading, English, and Writing examinations. Marie's style of teaching is very organized, thorough, and methodical. She was able to provide great test taking strategies which helped my son achieve excellent scores. She also helped him to become a better writer. Marie is very friendly and personable and my son enjoyed having her as his tutor!
Marie is a gifted teacher with a knack for understanding a child's learning style and an intellectual curiosity about learning which is truly inspiring. She showed more patience with our foster child from West Africa than any person who has ever worked with him and spent hours getting to know his language and structuring lessons around his strengths and weaknesses. He came into his own as a student on her watch, and it was remarkable to see.
My son's tutoring experience with Marie has been exceptional. He recently received an A- for his 6 week marking period in Spanish 3/4, which is a big improvement from his Spanish 1/2 grades last year. And while I am happy with his recent grade, I am more pleased by the fact that my son is feeling more confident and engaged in learning Spanish, and as a result, he is more focused on learning a subject that does not come easy to him. Marie has been able to make her lessons challenging and engaging for my son without making Spanish feel boring and like work. She is patient, and really cares about her students. I would recommend Marie as a tutor for any student looking to learn and improve their Spanish.
Marie's tutoring in both English and Spanish has really been an effective tool for me to both understand and pick up quicker Spanish. Marie is an excellent tutor. I am very pleased with her services. Thanks WyzAnt!
Marie is such a patient, enthusiastic, and well-informed tutor! She is always well-prepared for lessons, and goes the extra mile to find something interesting for me to work with. She is open-minded and cares what I want to do. Marie always has answers to my tricky questions on English grammar. Thank you for helping me improve my English, Marie!
Marie is a very good tutor!! I can say she is a great teacher in all aspects. She is very kind and considerate to patiently lead students to find their own path of learning and, most of all, motivate students to keep going on their interests in English.
I'm really enjoy the time with her and can find my speaking and listening comprehension significantly improved through the classes.
Thank you Marie!!
Marie has done an excellent job in tutoring our 5th grade daughter in writing and composition. We wanted our daughter to have a boost in her writing skills since it was her weakest area academically even though she was getting average grades. Marie proactively reached out to us upon seeing our listing, and has been just as proactive ever since.
She met with us to get to know our daughter a bit and learn about what we were looking for. From there Marie designed an approach tailored to her style of learning, and her strengths and weaknesses. After just a few lessons, we have seen our daughter's writing develop a more solid foundation and as well as deepen in style appropriate to whatever the assignment is.
Marie has been very hard working, patient and accommodating, and I would recommend her as a tutor to any student striving to improve their writing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an English Language Arts teacher and tutor and a grammar expert, I can teach students strategies for performing their best on the ACT English section. The ACT English section addresses both English grammar and usage and rhetorical skills. As an experienced grammar teacher, I can help students sharpen their grammar skills so that they can quickly eliminate incorrect answers and recognize correct ones. In the rhetorical skills section, students need to both read critically and to think like a writer in order to perform well. I teach students how to quickly grasp the main idea of each ACT English passage and how to distinguish important from irrelevant details.
Students and I work together to craft effective test-taking strategies that build on their strengths and address their challenges. I also teach students how to spot the subtle phrasing of test questions and answers that is intended to 'trip up' students who don't read them carefully enough. In the process, students develop test-taking confidence and a greater command of the type of material and questions on the ACT English section tests.
As a tutor, I am 'student-friendly'. Students are under a lot of pressure to perform well on these tests, so I make sure they know that I'm on their side. If they need to vent a bit about how stressful or annoying the whole testing process is, that's OK. This makes test prep sessions more relaxed and productive.
I graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University, worked at Harvard University's Peabody Museum and recently earned my CELTA TESOL certificate from University of Cambridge. I am a native English speaker and I also speak Spanish. I am experienced tutoring both native English speakers and ESL speakers.
As an English Language Arts teacher and tutor, and an avid and broad-ranging reader, I can teach students strategies for performing their best on the ACT reading section. The reading section is challenging. Students have to read quickly and efficiently in order to get through all of the questions in the allotted time. I help students address the test strategically to maximize their strengths and address their weaker areas, thus speeding up their overall performance and increasing their likelihood of getting a high score.
I train students to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant details so they can get the gist of the reading passages more quickly. For students who are not fast readers, I can teach scanning and skimming techniques that will enable them to correctly answer questions under the time-pressure of the test. I also help students recognize and familiarize themselves with the types of subtly phrased test questions and answers that can be misleading if not read carefully. Armed with these strategies, students can approach the test with greater confidence and perform more efficiently.
Because the college admissions testing process can be stressful for students, I make sure that our test prep sessions are both relaxed and productive. I let students know that I'm on their side and am invested in their success.
I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Tufts University. I did my fieldwork in Sherpa and Tibetan communities in Nepal, with a focus on energy issues, indigenous systems of forest conservation and cultural interactions between indigenous people, foreign aid workers, tourists and park staff in Mt. Everest National Park. My undergraduate studies emphasized Asia, with a particular focus on ritual and sustainable development. I can tutor students in all aspects of college-level cultural anthropology. I can also proofread and edit anthropology papers and theses.
In addition to my anthropological fieldwork, I have also worked as an assistant archivist at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University.
I have successfully passed the CBEST test and can teach you numerous effective test-taking strategies based on my personal experience with the test. I will take into account your strong areas and areas in need of improvement to create a personalized test-day plan for you.
As your tutor, I will show you several strategies for quickly and correctly responding to the multiple-choice questions. I can also coach you in writing techniques for the essay section, with an emphasis on writing speed, clarity and appropriate style. Your CBEST essays are graded on their degree of completeness as well as the quality and clarity of the writing. Thus, it is key to learn to balance writing clearly with writing efficiently. I can show you techniques to successfully complete practice CBEST exams with time to spare, so that you can calmly and confidently do your best on test day.
I am an experienced Language Arts and English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, tutor and Academic Intervention Specialist. I have taught and tutored students ages 4 to 16, with a special expertise in working with 1st, 4th and 5th grade students on reading and writing challenges. I am also experienced at tutoring Social Studies, Science and Math.
I am comfortable and experienced working with students who are performing at, below, or above grade level. I have worked with 'typical' students as well as with students with ADD/ADHD, learning and/or emotional challenges, and with 'gifted' students and English language learners. I have a special interest and experience in working with students who are both gifted and learning-challenged.
I enjoy helping students discover their own unique learning styles and develop successful learning strategies based on their strengths. I believe that all children can move beyond frustration and enjoy learning. Please see my subject descriptions for English, Reading, Writing, Phonics, ESL, Social Studies and Science for more information.
A Note to Parents and Guardians:
As an experienced elementary educator, I have tutored math to students in grades K-5. In all honesty, math is not my favorite subject to tutor, although I always got good grades in math up to and including trigonometry. (However, I have since forgotten everything I ever knew about trigonometry!) I do remember key geometry and algebra concepts and I am proficient in kindergarten through 5th grade math.
My greater expertise and interest is in English/Language Arts. I also love tutoring elementary social studies and science and I have subject descriptions for all of these areas. As the lead teacher in a San Francisco after school program, I designed an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum integrating language arts, social studies and science. I was also a volunteer science educator at the Berkeley Marina Shorebird Park Nature Center for one year.
Even though I don't love tutoring math, I understand that many parents want a tutor who can tutor all elementary subjects. To that end, I do accept tutoring positions where English/Language Arts, social studies and/or science tutoring is the primary need and math is a secondary need. If your child is struggling with reading or writing, I would be an excellent choice as a tutor, as I have successfully worked with many struggling readers and writers. I am a patient, enthusiastic and experienced English/Language Arts tutor.
However, if your child is seriously struggling with math, I recommend hiring a tutor who genuinely loves to tutor math. For a student who requires extensive help in several elementary subject areas, you may want to consider working with two different tutors, a Language Arts specialist such as myself, and an expert math tutor. This approach may produce better results for your child than simply working with one generalist.
Science is a fascinating subject which can easily be made dull by an uninspiring teacher. As a science educator, my first mission is to transmit a sense of wonder to my students. I find science to be exciting and at times utterly amazing, and I convey that to my students. Science has explained many of the mysteries of our world, but a good science educator does not present science as a dry, unchanging set of facts and laws, but rather as an evolving system of inquiry in which the science student plays an essential part: that of investigator.
Of course, there are immutable laws and principles that underlie the workings of our world and it is important for students to understand these. But as a science educator, I present science as more than just the study of what is already known. The most exciting part of science for most students is the sense of curiosity, investigation and discovery it engenders when it is taught well. With an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher, students learn to think like scientists and develop inquisitive minds.
As a science educator, I draw from experience in various educational contexts. As the Lead Teacher in a San Francisco after school program, I designed and led an experiential science curriculum for students ages 6 to 12 that incorporated cooking, gardening, art and reading. As a trained environmental education docent at the Shorebird Park Nature Center in Berkeley, I taught elementary school students about the ecology of the San Francisco Bay and led groups in hands-on experiments and nature discovery stations. Essential to this process was encouraging students to ask questions and guiding them to make their own discoveries. I also draw on the environmental science knowledge and commitment to conservation I gained in four years working for Greenpeace and The Sierra Club.
Currently, I volunteer with Pacifica Gardens, a community organic garden. I enjoy working with the master gardeners there and making my own discoveries as I learn more about the science of plants and soil. I enjoy guiding my students to develop their sense of curiosity and discovery as we study science together.
English as a Second Language students: please also see my subject description for ESL/ESOL.
I am an experienced English Language Arts teacher and am familiar with the California State/Common Core Language Arts Standards. I enjoy teaching all aspects of English, with a special emphasis on reading comprehension and essay and creative writing. I love to read and have read widely in English literature, from the classics to contemporary fiction. I am comfortable tutoring from elementary school through the college level.
Whether reading Dr. Seuss or Dostoyevsky, my goal is to help students to understand what they read, to articulate that understanding verbally, and to enjoy the learning process. I use student-centered methods, meaning that I help students connect personally with what they are studying. This makes learning more interesting and meaningful to students.
I also have a specialty in the area of English/Language Arts Academic Intervention: supporting students to learn and achieve their educational goals by helping them to discover their preferred learning styles and effectively utilize learning strategies based on those learning styles. In other words, I help students build on their strengths and turn those strengths into strategies to address their challenges.
A Note to College and High School Students and Parents:
I can help with all aspects of writing English papers: developing and organizing thoughts and opinions more clearly, finding evidence to support conclusions, and editing for both style and content. As part of this process, we will look at the source material (the book or other text) together to come to a better understanding of it. If you're struggling with understanding parts of the book, I can help you develop comprehension and critical thinking strategies. If you feel you've understood the book well, but just need help expressing and supporting your ideas in writing, I can help with that too. I can help you do better in your classes, develop greater confidence in your abilities, and enjoy reading and writing more.
I am a native English speaker and a Cambridge CELTA-certified, experienced English as a Second Language teacher and tutor. The University of Cambridge CELTA certification is one of the most rigorous and prestigious ESL teacher training programs in the world. As a 2012 graduate, I am up-to-date on current English language teaching methods.
I use a student-centered teaching style, basing lessons on each student's needs, interests and learning styles. As your tutor, I will help you develop your English language skills in the areas that are your personal priorities. We will study what interests you. English is an amazing and sometimes confusing language. As your teacher, I will help you understand the confusing parts and appreciate the amazing parts.
Areas of study may include: Speaking and Conversation, Pronunciation, Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Writing - Academic, Creative & Business styles, TOEFL test preparation. I teach Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced students. I am experienced at teaching adults, youth and children.

As a magna cum laude graduate of Tufts University and a former Center for Advanced Studies summa cum laude high school graduate, I am well-qualified to help prepare students to take the GED. I have also taught Language Arts and English/ESL to both youth and adults. I can teach students test-taking strategies to perform their best as well as review and re-teach subject matter as needed. I tailor my approach to students' needs and help students maximize their strengths to succeed on test day.
I am a friendly, supportive, patient and thorough tutor. I especially enjoy working with students who ask a lot of questions, since I believe that asking questions is one of the best ways to learn.
I am trained in the Guided Discovery method of grammar teaching, in which students learn grammar in a meaningful context. Because the most important aspect of grammar is the way it expresses meaning and knowledge, I help students learn and understand both grammatical forms and their uses and meanings.
I can help you learn to use English grammar confidently and correctly. I believe that students learn grammar both by practicing and by making mistakes. As I get to know your learning style, I will find the most helpful ways to teach you the grammar that is most important at your level of English skill.
The study of English grammar can be both interesting and fun, I promise!
As an experienced Language Arts teacher, I can teach students to recognize and understand literary devices such as metaphor, simile and other figurative language, foreshadowing, allegory, plot, setting and character as well as non-traditional narrative structures. I enjoy discussing literature with students and helping them understand and appreciate its relevance to their own lives and experiences. I believe that reading is one of life's greatest joys.
I have read widely in American, Asian, Latin American and European literature, and have recently expanded my reading of Middle Eastern and African literature. With my students, I am comfortable working with material from Dr. Seuss to Dostoyevsky and beyond.
I recently read and loved The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and am devoting the rest of my 2014 reading to contemporary fiction by women, with a couple of Jane Austen books slipped in for fun and historical perspective. I also enjoy reading literary science fiction by authors such as Octavia Butler, Philip K. Dick, William Gibson and Haruki Murakami. Other favorite authors include Dostoyevsky, Gunter Grass and Arundhati Roy.
My father is a Shakespeare scholar and the founder of a Shakespeare festival, so I grew up around the theatre and have seen and read many of Shakespeare's plays. I am also a fan of Ibsen and Tennessee Williams.
I love reading, writing and discussing poetry. My favorite poets include Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, Basho, William Blake and e.e. cummings. My poetry has been published nationally and internationally.
For Young Adult students: I have read and enjoyed both current and classic literature such as The Fault in Our Stars, City of Ember, The Catcher in the Rye, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and A Separate Peace. I love reading, discussing and writing about literature with high school and middle school students.
Children's Literature: As a former elementary Language Arts teacher, I take great pleasure in helping kids to understand and love children's literature. Some of my favorite childhood books included The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Little Women, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Ramona the Pest and anything by Judy Blume. More recently, I have enjoyed reading the Captain Underpants books with my younger students, the Harry Potter books with my middle-grade students and Aesop's Fables and The Call of the Wild with my upper-elementary students. I have also led book groups with 4th and 5th grade students, and particularly enjoyed reading and discussing Helen Keller's Teacher and The Helen Keller Story with a book group of 4th grade girls.
For ESL students studying English language literature: I can help you comprehend what you read better. I can clarify the meaning of unfamiliar idioms and expressions and the cultural contexts surrounding them. I can help you to use reading, discussing and writing about English language literature to build your English proficiency.
I am an experienced English Language Arts teacher, tutor and Academic Intervention Teacher. I have successfully used both phonics-based and whole language approaches to help Kindergarten through 3rd grade students improve their word pronunciation and reading or pre-reading skills. (This includes word 'decoding' or 'sounding out' skills for readers, and letter/sound relationships for pre-readers.)
I am experienced at working with pre-readers, early readers and challenged readers. I use a fun approach, linking phonics to picture-books for younger readers and choosing interesting age and reading-level appropriate materials for older readers still struggling with phonics. For pre-readers, I emphasize phonemic awareness, including such skills as perceiving and reproducing rhyming sounds and distinguishing between short and long vowel sounds.
I do not teach phonics in isolation, as an end in itself, but rather as a key that unlocks the door to better reading skills and more pleasure in and understanding of reading. For my students, I foster success and enjoyment in both reading and speaking, using phonics as an important tool in the process.
(A Note to Parents and Guardians: If your child is still struggling significantly with phonics in the 3rd grade, diagnostic educational testing is generally recommended to clarify the source(s) of the difficulty before or soon after beginning tutoring.)

Academic projects of over 40 pages require at least 10 days' notice and the client must specify the preferred style/format : e.g. Strunk & White, Chicago Manual of Style, APA, etc.
*Important Note to Parents:
For proofreading and editing of elementary, middle and high school students' work, parents must also book at least one 1-hour writing lesson with me for the student in question, so that the student can learn by participating in the revision process. I have a special interest in helping people overcome a fear of public speaking, as I myself have done.
I am an experienced English Language Arts teacher and am familiar with the California State Language Arts Standards. I am experienced at teaching all aspects of Language Arts, with a special emphasis on reading comprehension and essay and creative writing. I have a specialty in the area of Academic Intervention. I have been a practicing Buddhist and student of mindfulness for more than fifteen years. Over the years I have attended several mindfulness retreats both in the U.S. and overseas. I have also done college coursework in Buddhism and Comparative Religion. I have read widely in Buddhist studies, both from the original discourses of the Buddha and from authors such as Thich Nhat Hanh, the Dalai Lama, Pema Chodron, Sogyal Rinpoche and others.
In keeping with Buddhist tradition, I offer Buddhist studies on a suggested donation basis. Therefore, my published rate is only a suggested amount and is completely negotiable.
As an English Language Arts teacher and tutor, avid and broad-ranging reader, and high-scorer on the SAT verbal section, I can teach you strategies for performing your absolute best on the SAT reading, English and essay writing sections. I scored 720 (out of 800) on the SAT verbal section, using the more rigorous 1600 point scoring system from the 1980's. I went on to graduate magna cum laude from Tufts University.
My students and I work together to craft effective test-taking strategies that build on students' strengths and address their challenges. I also teach students how to spot the subtle phrasing of test questions and answers that is intended to 'trip up' students who don't read questions carefully enough. In the process, students develop test-taking confidence and a greater command of the type of material and questions on the SAT verbal section tests. I also work with students to improve their vocabulary, reading and writing skills, and overall test-taking speed.
As a tutor, I am 'student-friendly'. I know students are under a lot of pressure to perform well on these tests, so I make sure they know that I'm on their side. If they need to vent a bit of stress, that's OK. This makes test prep sessions more relaxed and productive.

I completed advanced level Spanish studies at the Academia Latinoamericana de Espanol while living in Quito, Ecuador for nine months, and I continue my studies and professional work in the Spanish education field. I am the editor of a Spanish textbook series for English-speaking learners of Spanish published by Internacional del Espanol in Quito, Ecuador.
I am an avid reader of Latin American literature and have enjoyed reading works such as La Casa en Mango Street, La Hija de Singer, Malinche and the poetry of Pablo Neruda in Spanish. I tutor beginning, intermediate and early advanced students in Spanish speaking, reading, writing, grammar and literature. I am currently reading El Tiempo de las Mariposas, by Julia Alvarez. Me encanta enseñar español y quisiera ayudarle con sus estudias. (I love teaching Spanish and would like to help you with your studies).
I am an experienced English/Language Arts teacher with a specialty in inclusive Language Arts Academic Intervention. I am a patient, friendly, tolerant, and enthusiastic educator with a good sense of humor. I have worked with students with mild to moderate ADD and ADHD, autism and other learning differences.
I have successfully worked with many students who were performing below grade level, including several students in Resource programs. I have also worked with several gifted students with learning differences, including ESL/ELD students with learning differences. I believe that everyone can enjoy learning, and that it is my job as an educator to help students discover their unique learning styles and build on their strengths to address their challenges. I enjoy customizing curricula and helping students find learning strategies that meet their particular learning needs, so they can rediscover their joy in learning.
Please note: While I have worked with many students with learning differences, I am not a certified special education teacher. For students with moderate to severe dyslexia, severe ADD or ADHD, or non-verbal/minimally verbal forms of autism, I would recommend seeking tutoring from a dyslexia specialist, certified special education teacher, or speech or other educational therapist, as appropriate.
As an experienced English/Language Arts teacher and tutor, I have taught spelling as part of the Language Arts curriculum. I take pride in my excellent spelling skills, and I believe that good spelling is an important facet of good writing. By the same token, I recognize that many students struggle with spelling.
As an English as a Second Language/ESL teacher, I also know that English spelling rules are much less consistent than spelling rules in several other languages. I can help students overcome frustration with spelling and learn to view it more as an interesting game with an unusual set of rules. I will help students see the consistent rules where they exist and recognize notable exceptions to those rules as well.
Please note: If your child is in 3rd grade or higher and is having extreme difficulty with spelling, you may want to consider testing for a learning disability, as spelling difficulties are sometimes features of underlying learning disabilities that need to be addressed.
I am an experienced Language Arts and ESL teacher and tutor. I am also an experienced Academic Mentor. In this capacity, I can help students identify their learning styles and develop learning strategies and study skills that build upon their strengths and address the areas needing improvement. I have worked successfully with students from 4 to 80 years old.
I am a Cambridge CELTA certified ESL teacher with experience in helping students prepare for the TOEFL test. Together, we identify students' areas of strength and areas in need of improvement. We then set goals to strengthen students' English skills according to students' specific needs. Because the TOEFL tests speaking, listening, reading and writing, we may emphasize skill development in some or all of these areas, depending on the student's needs and current abilities.
I match my teaching of vocabulary to your needs and interests as a student. I teach students strategies for learning and remembering vocabulary. Students learn new vocabulary best when it is taught in a meaningful context and when they can practice using it in speaking, reading and writing.
One amazing thing about the English language is how much vocabulary it has. The English language is always changing and evolving. New words are constantly being invented. This makes studying English vocabulary fascinating but also confusing at times. I can help!
As a native English speaker, a university graduate and an avid reader on many topics, I have an extensive vocabulary. I can help students understand the subtle differences in meaning and usage between similar words.
As a native English speaker and experienced writer and writing teacher, I can help students improve their English writing skills. I help students to structure their writing to express the meaning they intend in a way that is appropriate to the context in which the writing will be presented. I have taught writing to students of all ages, from elementary school age to adult.
There are many styles of writing in the English language. I work with students to determine which style(s) of writing to concentrate on. I can teach students techniques for writing essays, academic papers, business letters and proposals, personal letters, etc. I am also experienced in teaching creative writing. Regardless of the type of writing we work on, my goal is always to help students express their ideas clearly and compellingly in writing.
Parents: I enjoy helping students of all ages improve their writing and enjoy the writing process more. I can work with students on existing school assignments as well as create assignments to develop their writing skills in targeted areas. I have worked with both native English speakers and English as a Second Language/ESL/ELD students. I am experienced at and comfortable with working with students performing at, below and above grade level.
My poetry and academic writing have been published nationally and internationally.
