Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Experienced at building all the key steps to understanding algebra 1 well and adept at communicating skills for the mastery of this subject. I have years of teaching this subject. What I do first is evaluate your student in order to start with his/her level and build skills.

College Counseling

I have attended graduate school for my master's and doctorate. In the course of many years of tutoring and mentoring I have assisted students in choice of college majors, encouraged them to visit campuses to see if they are a good fit and helped with applications to top schools such as Yale and Swarthmore. I am qualified to aid in scholarship applications and take the anxiety out of the process of transitioning to top schools.

COOP/HSPT

I am quite experienced in the Parochial High School Admissions Exams. I worked in a learning center where I prepared students for high school careers in top programs, and I had the capability of placing all of them in their first choice schools.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a tutor, a substitute teacher in County Special Ed. an aide in special ed. and a Montessori teacher for many years. I have taught phonics, elementary math, social studies, reading, writing and science to hundreds of children. I have completed all the courses for a multiple subjects credential at SFSU. I have not done student teaching.

Elementary Math

I believe that building math skills can be fun and that attitude communicates itself to your child. I offer years of experience, skills and materials suitable for your child wherever he/she needs to begin. I take the time to evaluate each child at the beginning.

Elementary Science

Science interests need to be fostered early in life and I show each student how to study science, methods for learning terms and how to make the most progress in each study hour. I believe that success builds success and I assist each child until they know that they can master this study area and enjoy learning.

English

English expression is necessary for the well educated student to do well in their academic career in the U.S. I have a methodical program to teach mastery in all aspects of language and I insist on good skills so that each student can become a success.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught SAT writing, reading, vocabulary skills to students where English is a second language. They have scored well enough to handle college curriculum well and get degrees. I have also been an international adjunct professor for a seminary and have proofread and assisted students to write complex Theological papers.

GED

I am experienced at preparing adults for high school completion. I enjoy the preparations because this is such a devoted segment of our population who value education. The motivation of these adults makes teaching a dream.

Geometry

I insist that every student memorize their postulates, theorems and definitions in this subject so that they can successfully tackle proofs and continue to study math at all levels. I teach each student to diagram and to understand each step.

Grammar

In writing papers, grammar is an indication of having a good solid education. I am teaching this subject so that each student can write and proofread at all levels in their studies. This is in order to allow students to continue through a graduate level class and have confidence in their capabilities.

ISEE

I am qualified to teach test preparation for the ISEE because I have worked with students preparing them in all the academic work for these exams by working in a learning center. I had the joy of placing all of them in their first choice high schools, even some with disabilities.

Nutrition

I have my undergraduate degree in Home Economics where I studied Chemistry of Foods, upper and lower division nutrition and Foods Sciences. I worked in hospital dietary departments in two hospitals for a number of years where I provided service in menu checking and supplemental feedings. I was the head cook in two restaurants. I keep up with nutrition and its considerable progress in micro nutrients and vitamin deficiencies. I am an advocate for meal planning and home food preparation.

Phonics

I have studied Slingerland Method, completed the education courses in Reading at San Francisco State University and have also used Score as a basis for beginning reading with students for many years. I have seen my young students jump into literacy with my experience. When I am allowed to introduce them at a young age they become excellent students and spellers.

Photography

Art was my second major in undergraduate years and I have continued showing and winning awards in it for many years. My photography is one of my most successful mediums and I have won awards and made sales in it. I won an award in the San Mateo Arts Commission's Women Artists Show this spring by a very renown jurist. I enjoy teaching lighting and composition in this medium and encouraging others to really see.

Prealgebra

I believe that having good skills in integers, fractions, exponents, word problems and good math literacy is so important to keeping children competitive in the global arena. I work well with youngsters to build confidence in their mastery of these skills.

Proofreading

It is so important for a student to have ability to edit a paper well. It can mean the difference between them receiving a graduate degree or not. I encourage students to write clearly and in a focused manner with background in a method for correcting spelling, punctuation, verb tenses and verb agreement. I make it interesting and challenging.

PSAT

The mastery of the studies for the PSAT is necessary as a building block to the SAT but also to the GRE and other tests in the academic career. I love to work with students who can focus on the importance of mastery and I am capable of motivating them in methods to improve their testing ability in this exam.

Public Speaking

As a basis for public speaking, I have taught students to use words that are comprehensible to the audience. I encourage them to speak about a topic which they know well and have enthusiasm about their subject. I teach them to make brief notes or bullets on index cards and only refer to them occasionally. A key to their success is knowing the topic well. I teach them to make eye contact around the room to make the address personal.

Overcoming fear, I have taught them to find a topic which they like to tell about in a regular conversation. I have addressed lectures to college audiences.

Reading

The joy of reading enhances lifelong learning. Teaching an individual to comprehend, draw inferences and learn a subject can be the greatest freedom in the world because it can open the world to each student.

I am a lifelong learner and my enthusiasm, experience and proven methods can motivate a foundation of success for each student.

Religion

I hold a Masters in Theology and a Doctorate in Divinity. I am an adjunct Professor in Pastoral Theology. I am capable of teaching Old Testament, New Testament, Fundamental Moral Theology, overview of systematic Theology as well as any or all courses in Pastoral Theology

SAT Reading

I am experienced in teaching the Princeton Review method as well as teaching how to take each passage and understand it in the SAT. My students have gotten in to Ivy League schools because of the experience I offer.

SAT Writing

I offer a systematic approach to mastering the writing on the SAT. Writing an essay in a few short minutes takes a method to really shine. My students have excelled through my program and gain confidence in their skills to take the SAT.

Spelling

Spelling errors can indicate that a student is not reading enough. I have an approach to spelling rules, and advancing skills in this subject.

Having a paper with excellent spelling indicates a careful, well thought out topic and I want my students to be judged as the best.

SSAT

My high school entrance program was offered in the learning center where I worked and we were successful in getting each child placed in an outstanding high school. This process takes time so don't hesitate to give your student the benefit of a great method to promote skills for this exam.

Study Skills

I have completed the Elementary Education courses for a credential at SFSU. I teach children to study in the modality in which they learn best such as sight, auditory and kinesthetic. I use the Cornell note system for them to approach mastery of subjects and I have many tricks for advancing memory skills such as association and games to promote study. I plan lessons which are engaging to each student in order to promote success.

Vocabulary

I love to introduce children and adults to the joy of word mastery. I believe that this is a life-long skill that we can always challenge ourselves with and it increases comprehension and mastery of subjects. This can enhance written and spoken conversation and engagement. I work in all modalities to increase word mastery.

Writing

Writing a publishable paper in an area of experience is a gift to the world. I like to encourage all my students to tap into their experiences and write a focused and advanced paper.

I have worked in this area with those with disabilities and others throughout the spectrum to encourage competency and pleasure in expressing the written word.
