I have taught Spanish for more than 35 years in a variety of settings. I have instructed both in high school and community college levels and have taught students from all over the world. My ESL teaching experience has given me a wide panorama of different cultures in addition to knowledge of other languages such as Chinese, Burmese, Russian, Vietnamese, and Korean. I have found Bob to be an experienced tutor who is not only engaged in the learning process but also invested in his student's success. His efforts have pulled up my student's score a full letter grade. Not only is he an interesting and entertaining instructor, he will customize his lessons to fit the student. Rather than force them into unfocused study, he will help the student work towards specified goals and encourage their success.
We needed a tutor towards the end of the semester and needed someone to prepare my daughter for her final. Bob was caring and helped my daughter prepare for her final and guided her through the difficulties she was having. He was always following up with her and making sure she understood the material he was providing. He was very caring.
Bob is friendly, easy-going and a highly effective tutor. He understands the way local schools structure their Spanish classes and he does a great job of aligning his sessions with what students will need most to succeed in class. I think his tempo is best suited to working with students over an extended period of time. We needed two touch-up sessions in a hurry just before an exam, which can be a challenging request. The first session had a lot of getting-to-know you pleasantries and took a while to get rolling. In the second session, he was spot on.
Bob is very personable and my son is comfortable with him. He knows his material well, and is helping my son with his Spanish by teaching him tricks and the reasoning behind certain rules. We've only had a couple lessons, but they are going well, and we are very happy. I would recommend Bob!
Bob is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Spanish teacher. He responds quickly to both emails and calls. We really appreciate his kindness and thoughtfulness. He inspires and challenges our daughter to work hard.
Bob was able to very quickly assess my daughter's level of Spanish and pinpoint areas where she needed help. His previous experience teaching high school and understanding class requirements made it easy to start working productively right away. He came prepared with handouts so that he could present the material in a different way than is done in class.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught American History and California History in both the high school and college arenas. I have an MA in US History from USF(1973) and have guided several high school and college students in doing papers, studying for finals, etc.
I have taught ESL students from just about every corner of the world over the past 20 years. In addition, I have devised a placement test for our district (Jefferson Union High School District) in Daly City, CA. It has been used over the past 10 years to place new arrivals in their correct level. I speak Spanish fluently, but also am able to use some Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Russian, and Mandarin to communicate with students.
I have also developed curriculum for the following levels of ESL/ESOL; Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Throughout my high school teaching career from 1969-1992, I was the varsity golf coach at Archbishop Riordan High School. This necessitated that I was very familiar with the game, all the rules, and was able to give lessons to beginning golfers when needed. I have been an avid golfer for many years and am now back in the coaching arena. This spring, I coached the Riordan JV Golf team and have tried to renew the excitement of the game with Freshmen and Sophomores. I hope to continue doing this next spring. I have seen young people become pretty good golfers. A case in point-- Ed Campos, long-time pro at San Francisco Club, was a member of the Riordan Golf Team that I coached in 1969 and 1970.
In addition to having taught English/ESL to several different nationalities and age groups, I feel one of my strongest suits is English grammar. I have been a bit of a "martinet" in regard to my students using correct grammar in their speech and writing patterns. How we speak and write says volumes about us. I can help all age levels with their grammar issues and problems.
I am able to correct any document, essay, or other piece of writing in the following areas: grammar, spelling, sentence structure, paragraph logic, etc. The objective of my proofing would be to make the finished product easy to follow for both reader and listener. In addition, it would be in accord with basic English grammar rules.
I have an MA in Spanish and have taught all levels of this wonderful language. I have worked with all ages from the very young through those in their 70's. I am now retired from full-time, having taught 25+ years in high school and 10+ years at the community college and college levels. I currently teach two classes for adults in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. The classes are called "Survival Spanish" for those who want to learn enough to be more comfortable in an Hispanic workplace. But I can also offer intense immersion classes when needed.
Bob has worked with all nationalities while teaching all levels of ESL for several years. He has also worked with students studying for the TOEFL Exam. The TOEFL Exam is recognized around the world as a valid instrument of non-native's knowledge of English. He has helped several people pass this test on their way to a college education.
