UCSB Grad and Data Scientist - Excellent in Math and Physics

Fandi L.

About Fandi:
I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2016 with a B. S. in Physics and from the University of Virginia (UVA) in 2018 with an M. S. in Data Science at the University of Virginia (UVA).
I typically tutor high school and college level students, but I also mentor competitive math for middle school and high school students. I can tutor any maths and sciences at a high school level, including AP Exams and SAT Subject Tests, and I can tutor maths and physics for most undergraduate courses. I can also tutor in data science and machine learning related topics.
I was a participant and one of the school-wide top scorers in the AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME. As the president of my high school chapter for Mu Alpha Theta, the national high school & two-year college mathematics honor society, I encouraged students to participate in and helped them train for math competitions. As part of my undergraduate physics degree, I learned a lot of mathematics that are useful across many science and engineering disciplines. I continue to apply these skills regularly in my data science and machine learning work.

About my philosophy:
I believe that a deeper understanding of math and science requires one to build upon simpler concepts, and therefore it is important to not miss any gaps along the way. Standard education doesn't insist on perfection, it just makes note of the errors and moves on. This is poor scaffolding in the growth of one's ability, especially in math. It causes the student to seek memorization over understanding and actually results in less efficient learning. This inefficiency compounds as one progresses; the gaps become a debt.
At the same time, I understand that students have different priorities, needs, and environments. You decide what objective is best for you or your student and I will focus on that. Whether you want a high grade or test score, a deeper understanding, or a challenge, it should be achievable, provided that you are able and willing to put in the work.
