I love teaching because I love to learn. In addition to my bachelor's degree in psychology and my master's degree in education, I have obtained credentials to teach elementary school (all subjects), K-12 science, and K-12 social studies. I have been an educator since 2001, and during that time, I have helped students of all ages and backgrounds to see their potential and work hard to achieve it.
My strengths and my passion are in the language arts and test preparation. Whether we are working on understanding symbolism in poetry or picking apart prefixes for SAT, GED, ACT, or CAHSEE test prep, my primary focus in on the growth of my students. To enhance this progress, I will assign homework after each lesson because short practice sessions, spaced out over time, are the best way to improve long-term learning. I will provide timely feedback on the homework, and offer follow practice work if necessary.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you become the learner you want to be. I love teaching because I love to learn. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have earned a California Multiple Subjects Credential, and have five years of classroom teaching experience. I taught fourth grade for two years, and K-6 reading for one year. I also have two years of middle school science teaching experience.
Vocabulary development, reading fluency, and reading comprehension are among my strengths as a teacher, and English is my favorite subject to teach. My experience as a certificated teacher has exposed me to many helpful reading resources and strategies both online and on paper. Utilizing Internet-based resources for language arts allows me to provide quick feedback and modify practice assignments when necessary.
Reading and writing have always been two of my favorite subjects to teach. In 2006 I earned my Master's degree in Education, which required the reading and writing of copious essays and articles, including my thesis. In addition to my graduate work, writing online content for local news channels has given me a broader writing experience over the last decade. I also have personal experience writing successfully on high stakes professional educational exams such as the Praxis and CSET.
I have played volleyball since I was fifteen, including four years of college volleyball as an outside hitter and opposite. I have also played beach and grass doubles for over twenty years. In addition to my playing experience, I have three years of experience coaching a 17U club volleyball team.
