Hi! My name is Dejah! I hold a Bachelor of Science (magna cum laude) in Psychology (with a minor in Spanish), a Master of Arts (with distinction) in Psychological Sciences from Northern Arizona University, and a Master of Arts in Social Psychology from Claremont Graduate University. Most of my research is centered around the social psychology of group and interpersonal processes, and I have coauthored several peer-reviewed articles covering applied topics in social psychology.
I have nearly a decade of experience mentoring children and peers in various capacities (e.g., teaching assistant, supplemental instructor, tutor, lab manager) within a variety of courses in statistics, methodology, psychology, algebra, and English writing and language. I also hold a certification in Inclusive Excellence in College Teaching.
A critical element of my pedagogy is that I believe students should develop and practice the skill of advocating for their own learning. While I often work with a student's teacher behind the scenes to identify areas of improvement, I like to poll students directly on what concepts for which they believe they need further review. I then align student concerns with previous assessments to create more intentional practice problem sets and scenarios. Additionally, when developing these materials, I am mindful about assessing student interests and making my examples relevant to their hobbies or what they are studying. While this does involve a bit of extra effort on the backend, students are more than grateful for the chance to not only learn the content, but internalize it.
I am excited to work with you and/or your child! Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions about scheduling, my teaching style, or the subjects I am able to handle (I was a straight A student as a kid and can cover a lot of fundamental subjects).
