With 22+ years in education, I help students move from knowing the “what” to understanding the “how” and “why.” There’s no magic — just structured thinking, disciplined practice (with a sprinkle or two of whimsy), and partnership so performance follows.

I hold a degree in English (secondary emphasis) and TESOL certification. I teach middle school–college English and language arts, along with pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and intro trigonometry. Test prep includes SAT, ACT, HSPT, GRE, Praxis CORE, CBEST, CSET: English, U.S. Naturalization (Civics & English), and civil service exams.

All students complete diagnostics at the posted hourly rate. Diagnostics guide instruction; ongoing assessments measure growth.

I understand many families are navigating financial constraints. My current rate reflects that awareness while maintaining a structured, skill-focused approach.

Serious Notes:

Instructional Focus
Sessions strengthen foundational skills and reasoning. While we may reference schoolwork, I do not provide assignment-completion services as a primary function.

Diagnostic Requirement
Diagnostics are required for all students. No exceptions.

Parent Meeting (Minors)
A parent or guardian meeting is required at the beginning of the first session. Ongoing scheduling follows demonstrated consistency.

Learning Differences
If a student has a diagnosed or suspected learning, behavioral, or attention-related difference, mention this in your initial message. I work case-by-case; specialized intervention is not my primary focus.

Scheduling & Communication
Include your intended start date in your first message and ensure payment information is on file with Wyzant. Messages sent evenings, weekends, or holidays may receive next-business-day responses. Hold tight. I’m comin’.

I look forward to working with students ready to do the work.

CBEST

CBEST

I passed the CBEST on my first attempt. I've helped adults--many of whom haven't passed certain portions or any portion of the test--pass the CBEST, which has helped them get back into the classroom, begin their teaching careers, or maintain their teaching careers. I can do the same for you.
COOP/HSPT

COOP/HSPT

I have helped students gain entry to their preferred private high schools by helping them to improve their HSPT and COOP scores. Taking practice versions of these tests has given me insight into what students face when they sit for these exams. This insight, along with my background as a math tutor and high school English teacher, my understanding of different learning modalities, and feedback from past HSPT prep customers gives me an edge in helping students successfully boost their HSPT and COOP scores.
IELTS

IELTS

As an ESL instructor, I've helped several students successfully sit for IELTS. I've only taken practice exams, but the five years of experience I have as an ESL teacher has helped me to learn how to help speakers of languages other than English pass the exam.
Praxis

Praxis

I've taken and passed both sections of Praxis, as well as the section for working with students with special needs. Yes, I passed them all on the first attempt, and have helped other future teaching professionals do the same.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Don't be afraid if you need to relearn basics. Be prepared to move from moving numbers around the page to understanding the "hows" and "whys" of what you're doing (so you can bail yourself out if you forget a process). I meet you where you are and use what I know about you, your learning style, and your current grasp of math to help fill gaps in understanding or build on what you already know to help you get to the next level in pre-algebra. With 22+ years in the teaching and test prep arena, I help your middle schooler, high schooler, or Y-O-U make sense of pre-algebra in a way that sticks beyond just earning a decent grade on a test.

Just what my Son needed!!!!

From the moment I read her profile, I knew Kenisha would be an excellent fit for our son who is in an International Baccalaureate program but has trouble with standardize testing. For years, we’ve struggled with trying to understand “why”. After about 3 sessions, Kenisha figured it out and tailored a program to fit his needs. He takes the SAT again in 3 days. His scored increased by a 100 points on the practice test. He is much more confident about the test than he was 3 months ago. Thank you!!!!!!’

Amazing tutor

I appreciate Kenisha’s method of tutoring. She allowed me to write in my own voice and encouraged me not to worry about edits until the end. Her method helped me product an incredible paper! Thank you Kenisha!

About Kenisha: Kenisha is a passionate and insightful tutor who provides the learner with a safe and comfortable learning environment. She encourages the learner to think deeply which enables them to foster their thinking skills and synthesize new information with concepts the learner may not realize they already know. To the point: Yes, I was able to pass my exam, but I definitely would not have been able to do it on my own. Lessons with Kenisha: I've taken and failed the CSET: English Subtest II twice. After failing a second time, I reached out to Kenisha. We were able to get started immediately, and every single session up until my test date had been genuinely reflective and fulfilling. I left every session knowing I'd learned something new, and that I'd added to my list of skills and knowledge I needed in order to pass my exam. There's a reason for every question she asks you, and every answer you come up with connects to one or more concepts you have covered, are currently covering, or will cover in the future. And when you feel you just can't get the answer to a question, she'll give you the gentle push you need until you get there--or if you get it wrong, she's not afraid to point out where you went wrong. She'll even provide you with ways of remembering that seem to not stick. Her way of teaching is necessary for solidifying the groundwork of what you need to know and why you need to know it! Kenisha makes sure to teach in a way that fits your learning style. She genuinely cares that she's giving you assignments that reflect what you're learning and that it's sticking to your brain. If my professors were anything like Kenisha, I would've felt someone genuinely wanted the best for me and my educational career. Before lessons with Kenisha: After my first fail of the exam, I used an online site where I had to learn on my own by watching videos and completing every lesson by passing a five-question quiz. Overall, it wasn't enough because it didn't enforce my understanding of concepts or terms the videos covered. In addition, there was no immediate feedback, which is necessary when reviewing tons of new information. If you or your child are anything like me--need more self-discipline, and shy and need that extra encouragement to vocalize the critical thinking that's happening in your noggin--Kenisha will provide you with all the support you need to nurture and fulfill your educational needs. I can only hope that you take it one step further in your educational career by booking that first appointment with Kenisha because she's an absolute delight.

Knowledge and interactive tutor. Studies your learning style and genuinely works with you

Kenisha taught me the foundational principles of math such as finding the percent, finding the sales tax, and understanding place values. Additionally, Kenisha adds real world problem solving skills into math equations. So, that students are able to solve the problem in real life time. I am very appreciative of Kenisha because she works with her students and understanding their learning styles. In addition, she pushes her students and encourages them to embrace any challenge.

Friendly and personable

We completed the diagnostic exam today. Kenisha was very detailed in the process of preparation, and put my daughter at ease by getting to know her on a personal level. We are looking forward to her first lesson.
