About Kenisha

Bio

My 15+ years in the educational arena--and ongoing professional development--have taught me the importance of helping students shift from lower- to higher-order thinking, which is really only coaching students to go from knowing the "what" of things to putting all those "whats" together to understand the "hows" and "whys". There's no magic. I do what I do, and the rest only works if students do their parts.

To help me help you, please, please, please understand that:
1. I need you to include your intended start date in your first email.
2. You need to have payment information on file with Wyzant.
3. Another tutor may be more suitable if you're looking for a quick fix.
4. I can only help you if I know what help you need. Therefore, I give diagnostic exams to everyone at the posted hourly rate -- no exceptions.
5. Messages sent during holidays, weekends, or evenings may not receive responses until the next business day. Hold tight. I'm comin'.

Thanks for understanding.

I have a degree in English (with special emphasis on secondary education), and an ESL certification. Primarily, I teach English and language arts at the secondary and post-secondary levels (i.e., middle school, high school, college), but I have a knack for teaching math and algebra, so I offer lessons in those areas, as well. Prepping students for standardized tests--CBEST, CSET: English, SAT, ACT, HSPT, GRE, US Naturalization (Civics and English)--is a love a mine, too.

Focusing on students' different learning modalities, goals, abilities, and interests helps me boost students' confidence, which helps them achieve their academic goals. My tutoring and test prep students become optimally prepared for tests. Knowing tricky grammatical and mechanical principles or determining probabilities may not always be necessary in communicating basic ideas, but it helps in understandng broader ideas (well, the math, anyway). This knowledge makes a big difference in determining students' class placements, and it makes an even bigger difference when competing

I passed the CBEST on my first attempt. I've helped adults--many of whom haven't passed certain portions or any portion of the test--pass the CBEST, which has helped them get back into the classroom, begin their teachings careers, or maintain their teaching careers. I can do the same for you.

I have helped students gain acceptance to choice private schools by helping students to improve their HSPT and COOP scores. Taking practice versions of these tests has given me insight into what students face when they sit for these exams. This insight, along with my background as a high school English teacher, and my understanding of different learning modalities, gives me an edge in helping students successfully boost their HSPT and COOP scores.

Amazing tutor

I appreciate Kenisha’s method of tutoring. She allowed me to write in my own voice and encouraged me not to worry about edits until the end. Her method helped me product an incredible paper! Thank you Kenisha!

About Kenisha: Kenisha is a passionate and insightful tutor who provides the learner with a safe and comfortable learning environment. She encourages the learner to think deeply which enables them to foster their thinking skills and synthesize new information with concepts the learner may not realize they already know. To the point: Yes, I was able to pass my exam, but I definitely would not have been able to do it on my own. Lessons with Kenisha: I've taken and failed the CSET: English Subtest II twice. After failing a second time, I reached out to Kenisha. We were able to get started immediately, and every single session up until my test date had been genuinely reflective and fulfilling. I left every session knowing I'd learned something new, and that I'd added to my list of skills and knowledge I needed in order to pass my exam. There's a reason for every question she asks you, and every answer you come up with connects to one or more concepts you have covered, are currently covering, or will cover in the future. And when you feel you just can't get the answer to a question, she'll give you the gentle push you need until you get there--or if you get it wrong, she's not afraid to point out where you went wrong. She'll even provide you with ways of remembering that seem to not stick. Her way of teaching is necessary for solidifying the groundwork of what you need to know and why you need to know it! Kenisha makes sure to teach in a way that fits your learning style. She genuinely cares that she's giving you assignments that reflect what you're learning and that it's sticking to your brain. If my professors were anything like Kenisha, I would've felt someone genuinely wanted the best for me and my educational career. Before lessons with Kenisha: After my first fail of the exam, I used an online site where I had to learn on my own by watching videos and completing every lesson by passing a five-question quiz. Overall, it wasn't enough because it didn't enforce my understanding of concepts or terms the videos covered. In addition, there was no immediate feedback, which is necessary when reviewing tons of new information. If you or your child are anything like me--need more self-discipline, and shy and need that extra encouragement to vocalize the critical thinking that's happening in your noggin--Kenisha will provide you with all the support you need to nurture and fulfill your educational needs. I can only hope that you take it one step further in your educational career by booking that first appointment with Kenisha because she's an absolute delight.

Knowledge and interactive tutor. Studies your learning style and genuinely works with you

Kenisha taught me the foundational principles of math such as finding the percent, finding the sales tax, and understanding place values. Additionally, Kenisha adds real world problem solving skills into math equations. So, that students are able to solve the problem in real life time. I am very appreciative of Kenisha because she works with her students and understanding their learning styles. In addition, she pushes her students and encourages them to embrace any challenge.

Friendly and personable

We completed the diagnostic exam today. Kenisha was very detailed in the process of preparation, and put my daughter at ease by getting to know her on a personal level. We are looking forward to her first lesson.

Knowledgeable

Kenisha is great! She was friendly and was on time! She had me take a diagnostic test to evaluate my areas of strength and weakness in order to guide my tutoring sessions. She asked me questions to get to know me and how to better support me in the future. I look forward to working with her.

Friendly, Made my daughter comfortable

Kenisha was through in her intake and answered all of my questions. She addressed my concerns as well. She listened intently! I am glad we found her. My daughter was a little intimidated initially, but by the end of the call, she warmed up and was looking forward to learning from Kenisha.

Very insightful and explanatory tutor. Finds ways to relate to students.

She's taught me to relax and be confident in myself. She's shown me that I'm more knowledgeable than what I thought I was. She has an amazing personality and doesn't mind taking her time with me, for the things that I overthink about.
