Ali Y is an expert of the Turkish language with a deep knowledge of every aspect of its culture and history.
A number of professional experiences have qualified me for tutoring Turkish. Let me tell you a bit about my qualifications and experiences in teaching language:
Over the past eight years, I have published translations, taught private lessons in a number of languages including Turkish and German, and conducted original linguistic research as a graduate student, which resulted in my Master's Thesis in Linguistics with a focus in Turkish (M.A., University, 2019). In 2014, I began working as a teaching assistant and instructor at TLCP, one of the most prestigious and longest running intensive summer Turkish language programs worldwide. Working closely with TLCP organizers such as Dr. Sumru and Dr. Mine , I have learned much about the current best practices for teaching Turkish to foreign students. The many professors affiliated with the program have collaborated to pioneer the field of Turkish pedagogy as we know it today, and ongoing research at the university continues to strengthen their approach and expand available materials.
Furthermore, in 2017, I had the opportunity to serve as the sole Turkish instructor at SLI at the University of Pittsburgh, another prestigious summer language program where I gained complementary experience, particularly in being the sole professor developing materials and introducing total beginners to Turkish. I would relish the opportunity to further develop these skills while learning from fellow faculty in the MELC.
Over the years, with my flexible, tailored-to-student approach to foreign language education I brought 90 students to advanced level in Turkish, some of which have become Turkish instructors themselves. One of these long-time students, Jason Vivrette is now the Turkish instructor at UC Berkeley.
