PhD-Level Mathematician With a Clear, Enthusiastic Teaching Style

I'm Jens! I recently finished a PhD in Mathematics, specializing in Probability. Since 2018, I have been privately tutoring students, mostly in Calculus but also in courses ranging from Algebra 2 to Discrete Math. I also had the opportunity to be the primary lecturer for undergraduate classes (1st year Calculus, 3rd year Probability) as a grad student. Through these experiences, I've come to realize that I truly love teaching, and feel I have a knack for presenting math in a clear way, while maintaining a friendly, low-anxiety environment.

As a teacher, I believe in patiently taking care to make sure my students understand ideas as deeply as possible, able to ask themselves questions about the material and reason their way through answering them, rather than committing certain facts to memory and trying to recall what is relevant in each situation. At the same time, I strive to bring an enthusiastic energy and provide a friendly, welcoming environment, where students feel assured that it is safe to ask questions without judgment, and that effort will be taken to help them fill in any gaps in their understanding. I believe my teaching style leaves students feeling well-cared for and finding fun in the material, as evidenced by my RateMyProfessor reviews.

I have a Bachelors degree from UC Berkeley and a PhD from the University of British Columbia, both in Mathematics. I also spent a year working as a Software Development Engineer for Amazon. I can tutor for math courses up to and including the upper levels of university coursework, including preparation for contests such as the AMC. I can also tutor Physics and Computer Science (in Java or Python) up to a first-year university level. In my free time, I love running, hiking, singing, and throwing around a frisbee.
