Matt brings a rare combination of experiences to tutoring: professional saxophonist, former nonprofit finance director, and tech data analyst, all built on degrees in Jazz Studies and Economics from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music's Double Degree program. He scored an 800 on the SAT Math section and has experience tutoring all levels of high school math, with particular strength in AP Statistics and SAT/ACT Math prep. He also teaches private saxophone lessons and AP Music Theory.

Matt's approach to teaching is shaped by his training as a peer counselor and his experience navigating ADHD and executive function challenges. He believes that before any academic progress can happen, a student needs to feel genuinely understood. He draws on his active listening and counseling skills to meet each student where they are. Matt is especially drawn to working with students who learn differently and haven't yet found an approach that works for them.

AP Statistics made math click for Matt—he found that framing abstract methods around real-world questions, like the statistics behind a news headline or an advertisement, transformed the material from rote procedure into genuine critical thinking. He brings that same practical, contextual lens to everything he teaches. He sees statistical models and classical music theory not as separate disciplines but as different expressions of the same idea—how a structure is applied, interpreted, and sometimes deliberately subverted to create something new.

Outside of tutoring, Matt performs and composes original music, rides and runs on East Bay trails, and volunteers as a peer counselor serving marginalized communities.
