I'm Tom! I designed and completed one of the world's first interdisciplinary doctorates in AI Ethics at UC Berkeley. Before that, I first earned a Bachelor's degree, double majoring in Philosophy and Sociology and earning a Best Senior Thesis award. I then lived for two years in Europe, first as a Fulbright Scholar in Denmark researching Existentialism, and then in the UK where I acquired a master's in Political Thought and Intellectual History. Next I went to California and earned a master's in Sociology before joining the AI revolution as a researcher and entrepreneur.
My passion is to help students make connections between different domains of knowledge, in order to pursue their own interests and desired credentials. I love to put ideas and theories in context, so that you understand their historical significance and what they add to an intellectual tradition that has gone one for centuries or even thousands of years. My academic career has taught me that STEM and the humanities are asking many of the same fundamental questions, and merely using different methods to approach them.
I have designed and taught six undergraduate courses and one graduate seminar at Berkeley, in topics ranging from sociology to history to philosophy to artificial intelligence. I worked directly with students 1-1 in my own office hours, and also in larger lecture settings of 20-30 students. I have also tutored reading and writing composition to high school and college students while I was in college.
