About Nan

I have been a tutor for four years working with a wide range of students from K-8 grade. I work with children from the general population to those with special needs in areas of ADD, autism and children with emotional trama. I work as a tutor instead of a teacher because I enjoy working in a small group or one on one. I like to adapt my lessons to the student's needs and I find this easier to do in a smaller situation. I enjoy establishing a relationship with the student and figuring out the best way to teach them the information. I enjoy using technology to teach the students and try to find a creative way to do it. I want to make the learning fun and not a chore to the student. My style of teaching tends to be more easy going and fun. I try to focus on making it fun and adapt to their needs in a creative way.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Prealgebra

I have been working with children in foster care in core subjects from grades K-8th grade for the past three years. Sessions are two hours each, twice per week throughout the school year. I help students foster skills in test taking, note taking, creative writing, research and technical writing. I coordinate with teachers, counselors and social workers on goals for the student and track their academic progress. I am part of a support system for the student in their academic challenges and provide techniques to help them overcome the areas where assistance is needed. I find creative ways to get the students engaged in the session and create a lesson plan that best fits the individual needs. I create and modify modules that work with the particular student’s needs
